Some questions on 17" wheels.

I have a Good Stab at getting a Set of 17x7 Wheels..as of Present, they have Bridgestone Potenzas on them. But One is pretty well Worn,so Question #1: are the Bridgestone Potenzas a Good Tire to run?..the Tires are 215/45/17..Question #2: can I run a Different Brand of Tire(or Tread pattern) Other than Having to Stick to All Four Tires Being the Same?(that is Two tires same MFG, Up Front and Two tires the Same Brand in the Rear)..the car has NO ABS..it is an 1986 FC....Question#3..what is the Biggest Tire that I can Possibly Put on a 17x7" wheel?....Question #4: I have seen Wanli Tires, advertised.I Have heard of them,But I can't recall if they are a Cheapie tire or not.Are they?..AND Finally Question#5: what Brand of Wheel would you Gents Run?(this Of course is a question that I hope Will be answered with the Answer of a Reasonably Priced/Brand of Tire,as I am Retired, and Need to Eat some time this year!..But still want to have an FC with Rubber on it!)//Cheers guys..the Questions may have Been Asked Before, but I have read so much Stuff lately,I would most Likely have Grazed over it(or Forgot which thread it was anyhow!)....Thank you..STYX!~

Wanli? NO, just NO. They're cheap Chineese crap. Tires are all that connects the car to the road, not a place to cheap out. There's plenty of good options for inexpensive tires. My last set of tires were Kumho SPT's and I was quite happy with them and they're very cheap. Other comparable tires would be BFG g-Force Sports, Fuzion ZRi's and General Exclaim UHP's, all supposedly quite good. They're not top performers, but will last longer. One good bargain if you want great performance and long life is if you can find a Subaru STi OEM tires. It happens not infrequently that slightly used sets are sold due to going to larger or wider wheels. They're excellent tires (Bridgestone RE-070) and are a 225/45/17. NASIOC is a good place to look. They're expensive when new, but there's lots of slightly more used sets going for much less. It's the tire I'm currently using and they're quite fabulous.

Bridgestone makes a ton of different tires called Potenza. Some are better than others. It's ok to run different tires front and back, as long as they're at least similiar, but expect that it'll handle differently and it could change as the tires heat up. It's best to have the same size if you want to do any performance driving.

For the wheels, I prefer to go wider, 17x8's fit nicely with a 225/45/17. Anything from 35-25mm offset will fit on stock fenders. Running wider wheels helps give better feel through the wheel and sharper handling, and opens up the possibility of running wider tires. For a 17x7 the biggest reccomended size is 225/45/17, although I'm sure others will have gone wider. A good budget wheel solution is OEM Mustang GT wheels, 17x8, 30mm offset, 5x114.3 and not terribly heavy at about 20lbs for one style (it's what I'm currently using).

Having ran a set of Fuzion ZRi's, they are not bad for the price.

What offset are those wheels? If the offset is outside of a given range then you'll be more limited on tire width due to rubbing concerns.

I think they've discontinued the 512's.
