Question shipping wheels AND tires...deflate tires or not?

I'm shipping out my stock wheels mounted with tires, and I'm wondering if there is any advantage/disadvantage to shipping them with all of the air pressure out of the tires?

Has anyone shipped wheels and tires one way or the other?

Any advice is appreciated.

Thanks!

When I shipped my wheels and tires I let the air out so that they would fit in the box. I don't think there is any difference one way or another.

Other than the obvious? they weigh less and take up less space... both resulting in a cheaper (albeit small) shipping charge..

Depends on how you pack them. With air in the tires the beads of the wheels will be more protected.

Congrats on the sale.

That was my thought, that the beads will be better protected. Gonna try and get them shipped out today, if I can find boxes!

Thanks

I was thinking of selling my stock wheels and tires too. Mind if I ask what you got for them? Anyone know how much they are valued at?

Sure they do. Air has mass, how do you think a blimp works? Not enough to matter to the shipping company though.

A gallon of air at ambient temperature and pressure weighs 0.01 lbs. I proved this in another post recently for someone who said air weighs "nothing".

Even at higher pressure, the air in a tire only weighs about 10-15 grams, depending on the size of the tire. Not enough to make a difference in shipping weight, I'm afraid.

As jimlab says, air has mass but not much. Putting 30 pounds of air in your tire does not add 30 pounds of weight. 30 pounds in a tire means 30 pounds of air pressure, not weight.

Just fill em' with helium then! j/k
If the box is big enough I'd vote to leave them filled, the new owner may not have a compressor and may want to install them right away. If you were real **** about saving a few grams, let the air out, take the wheel weights off and remove the valve caps
