RIMS/TIRE sizes

Hey I just recently bought a 88AE and i was wondering what are the optimal sizes for tires/rims and what are the most well name brands that i should look for. Thanks in advance. I know i sound like a n00b but a n00b has to learn sometime.

Stock or mild power upgrades - stick with stock rims or rims of the same size, 16" x 7", +35 with 225/50/16 in all 4 corners.

Want bigger rims?
Step up to 17's...17" x 8", +30 with 225/45/17 in all four corners.

Making more than 300hp?
Staggered set-up's will help keep wheelspin to a minimum at the rear wheels.
17" x 8" +30 front with 225/45/17 tires, 17" x 9" +30 rear with 255/40/17 tires

I like Japan rims for these cars...
SSR (bankrupt), Work, Blitz, Rays Engineering / Volk Racing...

I just got some new rims so I can't be absolutely sure on fitment but I'll find out!

I have 17x8 rimsx40mm offset and I will be getting 235x40x17 Yokohama AVS ES100's up front with a 5mm spacer(to make it 35mm offset). I will then have 245X40X17 rears with no spacer. Same ES100's as front.

I'm hoping the front will fit right.
The rear should be fine.

Tirerack I believe has a tire calculator to show what sizes work on your car to match the stock speedo/tire size.
235x40 up front does not match the stock size perfectly and will cause a bit of speedo miscalcualtion. That is why I'm running 245x40's on the rear. They are extremely close to stock(like .5 miles off of stock at 60mph).

As for brands. Go with what ever rim you want. Honestly I doubt many people here are using their car so hard that a lower grade rim would cause anything. Although weight does play a factor.

Tires.
I did some searching and just ended up having too many options and little answers.
So far Hankook has cheap tires which sound good but I didn't get any real life feedback on them.
Kumho Ectas 711 and 712 are suppose to be shitty.
I think it's Kumho ecta MX's which are good.

Every post I saw about Yokohama AVS ES100's was good about grip although the wear is a bit scary. I hope to get about 20k on them before replacing them.

Oh yeah.
ReTed's info is perfect as well. 225 is a great fit and perfect tire match.

I know my tire setup is over kill but I really want to see how much it imprives over my current 205x60x15

offset is a bit hard to explain.

Take the wheel.
Say it is 8 inches wide.

Zero offset is dead in the middle(4inches)
offset is the distance from the center in millimeters.

I may have this backwards.
Positive offset is when the hub bolts closer to the car side than the exterioir(visual part) of the rim

Actually I found a perfect pic.

Changing offset is usually to change the placement of the tire in the fender.
A wider tire will need to be placed further out to not hit the inner fender.

Sticking tires out of the fenders is most likely illegal on public roads.
Most municipal traffic penal codes that dictate what is legal or illegal on public roads will explicitly state no tire tread outside of the vertical plane of the fender edge.

They are most likely for looks.
Some people call them "reverse offset".
Stupid if you ask me.
