Ok, I have the strut off from the RX, and I just have to get the 21mm nut off from the top of the shock, and get the lower part out of the strut tube.

How do I keep the shock shaft from turning? The problem with the nut at the top is when I turn it, the shock shaft turns with it. There is a place to hold the shaft, but this is covered up by the socket, and the nut is counter sunk so I can’t use a box wrench. Anyone who has done this knows what I mean.

Also, what is the best way to get the ring that holds the shock body inside the tube. I have tried large battery pliers, and tried to pound it loose from an angle with a large bolt , but it is being stuborn.

Do either of these jobs require special tools?

 

For safety reasons I hope you are using a spring compressor.
If you take that nut off as is you're going to get a face full of metal.

Also this might be a better suited thread for the first gen section, I haven't replaced mine myself so I don't know the full details and sizing you need to complete your project. Someone is the first gen section will be able to give you better details. The Haynes manual has a section close to the back that tells you how to replace the shocks also.

 

Best way is to remove that nut while the strut is still on the car, wheels on the ground. Once it is off, then you raise the car, slowly releasing the spring pressure.

With the strut off the car, you'll need a spring compressor (you can rent these from most autoparts stores) and air tools (I've used an electric impact wrench, which works great).

I ended up taking the entire unit off, and holding the shock shaft with a pipe wrench. I held it as far up as possible so as not to ruin the replacement shock.
