Removing top nut from Tokico Illumina

After compressing the springs on my shock assembly, I can't remove the top nut from the shock because the entire shaft spins with the nut....I can't clamp the shaft because I dont want to damage it. Is there a trick to this? This is for an fd by the way. Thanks.

You can either use an impact (recommended), or use some shop rags wrapped around the shaft and apply a little force with some pliers.

i just did my suspension this weekend and used an impact for that task. definitely recommend an impact if you have access to one.

Although most will recommend NOT to use an impact on the nut, it's probably the fastest way to get it off...
Some catch-22 huh?

i tried two things: first I bought the smallest wrench I could fit on the flat part of the top of the shaft to hold it while I turned the nut but it kept slipping and f'ing up the threads.

Then I was out of ideas and brought it to a shop and they used an impact and it came right off....only wish I checked this thread earlier I would have wasted less time.

Thanks!

Hey dude. I just did this this afternoon. On Konis, you need an 8 or 9mm at the very top to hold the shaft and then you can take the big nut off with a 19mm. Tokicos might or might not be similar... PM me if you need some help. I think I might be free tomorrow and I am living in Astoria now.

How do you like the Illumina's? I'm researching my options for stock replacements on a budget...so i was curious.
