Reason why 275 tire on a 9" rim is bad!

So you should have also mentioned the opposite of too wide a rim for a tire.
For many brands 9" wide is the minimun wheel rim width for 275s so it is good.
I always use the rule of thumb wheel width plus 20-30 mm. This says 255 fits perfect on a 9" wide wheel. 275 you'd really rather be into a 10" and 285 you want a 10.5" wheel
I have 255's on an 8" rim and they look fine, no bulge. 40 series sidewall.
They look normal.
I also have 245's on a 7.5" rim, they also look fine/normal, but I don't think i'd go any narrower.

You guys should visit the mustang forums then, they run EXTREME tire setups for the rear.
For instance, they run a 285 on a 9 inch rim.
And if i recall correctly, my friend with a grand national told me he ran a 285 on his 8 inch rim at one time.

OP: whoever told you that 275 on a 9" wheel was a bad idea was likely one of those tire stretch fools who want to put a 245 or 255 onto a 9" because "it feels more responsive". It might "feel" more responsive, but it has LESS GRIP.
Not only is 9" wheel within spec of the tire maker, it doesnt even look budged.
I have 275/35/18's on my 18x9 and there is no budge to be found.

I have 255/35 and 285/35 Toyos on my 9.5 and 10.5 volk GTS fro my Z and it's really nice. I thought the fronts were a little small but there just right. I don't know if I would go to a 295 on a 9" maybe a 9.5". Lets just say I want a little stretch and a lower profile sidewall, not stupid low around a 35, but it always depends on what size wheels your getting and brand tire cause they all depend.
This is going to be somewhat dependant on the exact tire, the sizes are nominal and vary from manuacturer to manufacturer.
Years ago I ran a 275/40/17 Bridgestone RE71 on a 9" wheel. The RE71 was MASSIVE for a 275, it looked like a 315! It bulged like hell and looked funny. Other 275's I've seen on 9" wheels don't look so bad... Toyo T1S's are relatively narrow for a given size.
That said, tires should neither be stuffed on to small rims, nor stretched on to big rims for optimum performance and looks. They should be "comfortable". Most 275's are going to look right on a 10" wheel. Those RE71's I had were originally developed as the OE tire for the 959, to be mounted on an 11" wheel, and they woud've filled one easily.

What's even funnier is how you'd equate stretching tires with manhood. Any asswipe can stretch a tire, it doesn't prove anything, like you'd climbed mount everest or something. It's not a contest.
Huh? Owned? What imaginary battle did you just win junior?
To MY point, any asswipe can put any tire on any wheel. It's not a contest in either direction. Get your mommy to reread it for you.

Aggressive tire stretch I believe happened because someone wanted to put a really aggressive wheel with an aggressive offset under there fenders without having to mod the fenders or a slight modification. And then there are people like me who still end up rolling fenders or running cmaber. Or maybe some japanese people had too much sake..hahaha
Tires are a matter of preference. Yes running to little on a wide wheel i personally think is stupid...why. cause my friend had his tire bead come off of the wheel while he was driving, luckily he didn't damage anything. That said run w/e you feel is necessary and ask.
The only thing I dont like about the stretch is the consequences that might come with it but other then that i think it looks really good and would only run it on a car to go cruising to town in, like a Bippu style lexus.

you can pretty much have an assortment of tire sizes and wheel sizes. it all depends on what you are looking for. i think it's more of preference and what has worked in the past. maybe even what is closest to stock diameter for mph values and things of that nature.
