Talking Official Tire Thread

Alright... another official thread my me

I got this idea from Supraforums and it seems REALLY helpful.

Just list the tires you used(brand and model) and list:

-Traction in dry
-Traction in wet
-Traction in cold weather
-Traction in snow(all seasons or winter tires only obviously... )
-Traction and control during slide/drift
-Traction at Autocross
-Traction at drag strip
-How fast they wear down
-Traction in coners on street
-And any pros/cons and experience with the tires you'd like to talk about

I think this thread will become really useful when choosing tires

So, guys, starting posting up!

Thanks in advance for those of you who contribute

I'll start...

Bridgestone Potenza S03

-great traction all around
-but no traction in cold weather(i'm not talking about snow or rain... just in dry in 30s or lower)
-lasted me about 8k miles on the first set... but I was doing a lot of powerslides. Second set lasted me 10k before I sold the car and there were still plenty of tread left
-wet traction is AWESOME even if the tire is pretty worn out
-lots of GRIP!
-control during a slide/drift is AWESOME. They hold really well during slide/drift.
-Best tires I have ever used

Pirelli P7000

-No traction
-No traction... Lost control few times and almost went off the ramp once in rain...
-I bought my Supra with them so can't comment on how fast they wear down
-Terrible wheel hop with any kind of lauching involving wheel spin...

Do not buy these... worst tires I have ever used...

Dunlop SP9000

-Good dry traction
-Wet traction is OK
-It kinda lets go all of a sudden though...
-Only had those for 3.6k miles... can't really comment on how long they last

I just didn't mention the areas that I don't have any experience with

I will make it easy. Go to www.tirerack.com and read the customer ratings

That doesn't really tell you much. Also, they do not have all of the tires... I know they don't carry Toyos... and some other brands. Also, they don't state traction during slides, road course, auto x, cold weather, etc etc etc. And I also think it's good to hear what everyone has to say about the tires they have used. Trust me, this one will be extremely helpful when choosing the right tires for your needs.

The problem that I see w/ this thread is the a lot of the info will be based on one's opinions/perceptions/driving habits, etc.. Also, tire models gets updates or phased out every so often...so a tire may be unavailable some time down the line.

You're not going to get that kind of info. You'll get "I love these!" or "I hate these" and you have no idea if the person knows what they are talking about. The source of the info is most important.

People are going to be encouraged to weigh in with an "expert" opinion when they honestely have little basis for comparison. Take tire recommendations with a grain of salt. It's like somebody saying their favorite band is better than all the rest; there's too much room for personal taste.

Errr... whatever then. I still think it would be helpful if we can gather up everyone's opinion. I know that we're no experts and these are just "opinions" but nonetheless, it would be nice to get some more detailed feedback and opinions rather than just going by tirerack's scores. Also, I thought the tirerack's scores were rates by comsumers? which means that they weren't rated by the pros either.

That was my point. Tire Rack already has hundreds of up to date responses from consumers about the tires they purchased. There are tremendously more opinions from customers there than you could ever hope to see in this thread on rx7club.com.

The best plan of action is to go somewhere else for a review on a particular tire. If you can't find a review somewhere else than ask here about a specific model.

That makes the best use of resources.

I just thought it would be a good idea to gather up detailed opinoins about different tires and not just some scores. It's not like it's too much work or anything and you're giving me so much **** about it?

Nevermind. Mods, if you can, just delete this useless thread please.

I'm not giving you ****. I'm disagreeing with you and offering my point of view as to why. Anyone wishing to look for tire reviews would be much better served by looking somewhere where they already exist rather than look here. A site like Tire Rack is going to have MANY more reviews about MANY more tires than you'll hope to find or generate on this site for the simple reason that Tire Rack has thousands of customers a day.

I don't see the perceived advantage of trying to create tire info here on this site when it's already available elsewhere. That's my opinon. Posters here may disagree.

damon...you must have better things to do than troll this potentially useful thread.

i have been reading all the reviews on tire rack and the other places...all i am getting is conflicting information.

info from the people here is just as valid as there...if not more so because the people here are using the tires on the same vehicles, rims, and situations that I might.

please dont go ruining threads homie.

Like I said, these are MY opinions. There is no ruining the thread. If I wanted to be rude about it I could close it or delete it. If the posters wish to add their own tire comments it's fine by me!

FALKEN AZENIS SPORT on my S14:
Dry traction: Excellent!! (duh)
Wet Traction: Shitty
Cold traction: ZERO
Hot traction: super dooper
Cornering on street: VERY good
" " Track:
Drag Racing: Very good, brngs you right out of the hole
No personal exp.
Slide control: They let go very suddenly but provide decent if not overly sharp control during slides. good for experienced driver
Lasted me like 3k miles. (rears) Remember i was 17 with my first car which was RWD.
Overall: these tires are the **** for Road racing and occasional drifting, gotta get used to the edgy response though, also very vague on the freeway. Not for rainy climates either.

YOKOHAMA AVS ES100's also my S14
Wet traction is excellent, esp. wet braking
Dry traction less than the Falkens
Cornering see above
Very stable at speed, not as responsive to turn is as the Azebis, but very easy to controll during a drift, very predictable handling
Lasted me about 6k before camber/aggressive driving killed them.
Very good performance tire for street driving in wet climates. Handle ok while cold, (cold in AZ is like 55 degrees though)

MORE to Come!!

I got my FD with worn out tires, replaced with 245/45/16 S03's.

Dry traction is very good. Don't drive in the rain.
On the track they make lots of noise at the edge, but give you good feedback. In the heat (88f)I got a little chunking (and melting of thread) after several hot lapping sessions. Overall the tires did great on the track, still wishing I had racing tires.

I would recomend this tire, and I found Costco the most cost effective place to purchase.

I think you can get away with 245's all the way around, but I am not 100% sure on that.
