Question Nub needs advice on rim wheel strenght

Howdy i'm new to this forum but i've been readn some of ya'lls inputs and u guys seem pretty knowledgeable here so i'm hoping someone here has some insight on this:

my brother has an fd and i love it to death and i'm planning on building one myself here soon.

**i wanna to know if gram light 57f forged wheels 17x10s (not 57f pros) in the rear are strong enough for long bouts of spirited cornering, hard acceleration, breaking, wheel spin, etc?**

these rims are 5 narrow spoke forged rims that are very light. will very light rims like these fail in heavy cornering, acc, and breaking?? if not are bbs rgr stronger?

i'm going to build:
-single t04 or gt40r with largish turbine (i want flow over spool so the engine stays nice n happy)
-looking to make 320-350rwhp on 10-11.5 psi (road n track use no drag)

alright first off, the 57f is not that light.

its by no means a turd in terms of wheel selection. but there are many wheels that are lighter. the RGR you mention is actually almost 2 lbs lighter in the comparison size i have listed(18x8.5)

second of all, i'm sure its fine for your application. gram light makes good quality wheels. the 57f is fairly popular and many people run wheels from their line up from street to track to drift without any problems.

thanks for the input:

about the gram lights, i'll give you that. i went off tirerack.com's quote of 15.5lbs for the 17 in 57F. well more research and and i found GLs 57F is not very light in larger sizes, you're right.

about the BBS, i'll give you that too. they're actually considerably lighter at larger sizes than the 57F.. but they're a bit more expensive too

but something still doesn't makes sense to me:

why do i see road racing cars, especially racing spec cars riding around on big heavy 3pc rims like BBS LM if lighter wheels of the same dimensions can stand up to the beating?

note: a new light weight dark horse is in the running. rays metal volk TE37 are about the same weight as the BBS and a tad less expensive. i assume the TE37s are also quite strong too, right?

ah. weight is everything. but everything is not enough to get me to go out and buy Magnesium wheels, so i'm trying to find the lightest strongest wheel that ain't gonna bust the bank.

te37's are actually very popular and have a good reputation as a lightweight and well manufactured wheel.

as for your question, i really have no idea... maybe they simply like how they look. or maybe they are sponsored by BBS? :P

best bang for the buck imo would be enkei RPF1's. they ridiculously light and also very cheap... half a lb lighter than the te37 in 17x9. and cheaper than the te37 by roughly $250! lighter than the RGR in 17x9 by over one full lb as well. tried and true as well. these wheels are old and tons of people run them in basically everything.

at any rate, check wheelweights.net
good resource for comparing wheels

^Most likely b/c they are strong wheels that will stand up to rigors of racing.

Lightness isn't everything. Strength, durability and cost is also a factor.

Sports Car and Grassroots Motorsports just had some articles on wheel weights and wheel sizes if you are interested in checking it researching the topic. Google will give you some good hits also.

doubtful

BBS LMs are probably my favorite wheels in terms of style.
but they are pretty damn heavy for their size

BBS RGRs are lighter than BBS LMs in the same size by nearly 3 lbs. in wheel terms, that's a big difference.

sweet j son of mary those enkei RP F1s look perfect on paper, they're lighter and cheaper..
but hmm. can they stand up to the "rigors of racing" (as gracer7 put it) as cast wheels?

i think the bbs rg-r is probably stronger than the enkei. can i break a set of cast enkeis by repeatedly standing on the break, cornering at the limit, and standing on the gas with 330-350rwhp with an occasional harsh bump here or there (Road America ain't perfect silky smooth everywhere on the track lol)??

look up rpf1 on the forum

there are ALOT of guys running these wheels on many different cars, precisely because they see what you see. great bang for the buck for a well proven wheel.
