non DOT approved tires...
can non Dot approved tires be imported into the US or Canada? Will anyone be checking if your driving around with DOT approved tires or not? What happens if you get into an accident? Will insurance cover if its not tire related? What happens if your wheels get stolen? Will they cover for your tires also? Thanks for any info...

What tires are you specifically thinking of?
You could run non-DOT-approved race slicks on the street, but they would get damaged quickly and they cost a lot. You could get a ticket if you get pulled over and the cops didn't like them, and you could be in legal trouble if you had a tire failure and killed someone, or something like that. But it isn't hard to get tires that aren't DOT approved, and it is not illegal to posses them or anything. The hard part is finding a reason why you would want to run them on the street. Why?

Other downsides of tires like that on the street...
- They'll kill you in the rain.
- Tires that sticky throw rocks. On a regular basis this will hurt your paint.
- They'll wear out in a hurry.

acutally the tires are from japan. since im ordering wheels from there, i might as well get tires also. they are the dunlop lemans 702, right next to the flagship sp9000. but i think i might just get the sp9000's from japan instead. thanks for the info...

I am sure that isn't legal, but I would guess that the tire is reasonable for street use. I've seen a few cars with Japan-only tires that I figure might not have gotten DOT approval.
Compared to other tires in their class, Dunlop SP9000s are not very good tires. I read a test where they tested different tires on Mustang GTs (heavy, primitive suspension) and the SP9000 performed well, but it has not been very impressive in Tire Rack's testing:

Personally, I would not buy SP9000s for an RX-7. There are better tires available for the same or less money.

Since I think you are in Vancouver I would NOT get those tires! they will tow you on the spot if they catch you. and right now it won't be hard as that is all they are doing. 1500 seems too much!. I just picked up a set of toyo t1-s for under 1000cnd and I bet they are a better tire. but that was 16". it will add alot to the shipping if you get tires aswell. probably much cheaper to buy tires here.

actually these tires are not for my TII. I wanted some tires for my 20x10 Lowenhart LS1's in chrome which i ordered in japan for my SC430 that i picked up a few months back. I havent touched the TII in a couple months. For 1600CAD i think its worth it. Toyo T1's for 1000$ is really cheap. Where did you get it from?
