Just got my car back from my mechanic's shop. He installed Hawk HPS pads and new rotors on F/R for me, and now it stops longer. I did the brake in procedure (10 medium stops from 40, 3 hard stops from 55), and let them cool for 15min....but same effect, they stop longer and dont bite hard at all. The out of spec stock rotors and pads with less than 1mm left on them bit hard enough to lock the tires up from 40mph (no abs and brake bias), and now the new pads wont even lock the tires up from 60mph on a panic stop.

Anyone know whats up?

EDIT: Just for ***** and giggles, i did the burnishing process again through my neighborhood, came to a stop in my garage, and used an infrared thermometer on the rotors, read 180-190* on the fronts and 145-150* on the rear, so i know the F/R bias isnt overworking the rears.

Pads are still probably bedding in. What brake pads were you running before?

nothing special. The previous owner (ive had the car for 2 years now) never mentioned anything about special brake pads, the dusting was minimal, and the appearance of the pads never looked like anything special, so my best guess would be just ur OEM Mazda or (insert mundane brand here) organic compound pads.

Check the brake fluid level, and make sure they are bedded 1st. HPS do dust qite a bit.

the fluid level is good and the pedal feel is good, i know there isnt air in the lines. BTW, whats the definition of a "bedded" pad?
