how much difference can 1mm error in offset make

so i have a dilema, i messed up one of my front wheels. turns out the model of wheel i have fn01rc in hyperblack is being discontinued. any i was able to locate one through Hikaru here on the forum, but it is a 38mm offset. he says the shop can trim it down to 42mm offset.

my questions are these; 1) is it safe to trim a wheel like that? i am not on the road course all day everyday, more burning the backroads, but i do push my car hard sometimes. 2) would i be able to tell the difference in steering feel? 3) would a 1mm shim on the other side, be a feasible alternative, in effect making the 43mm offset wheel a 42mm by adding the extra millimeter?

i really don't want to drop the $$ for a whole new set of wheels right now, other projects are at the forefront.

Depends if your 1mm of catching your fender or Coil over.

But if its for example an 8" rim and you are running + 44 rather than the +45 you wanted it will make F.A. Diffrence.

i think i will be good as far as clearance. my concern was not the 1mm itself, but the fact that one wheel would be 43mm and one 42mm on the other.

i have decided to just go with it, and make a 1mm shim (1mm = 18gauge), I have access to a machine shop, so it should be relatively easy.

it probably wouldnt make much of a difference either way, but it's the compulsive part of me that pushes me to do it.

I'd be worried about the strength of the hubs when shaving off the material, but it depends on the construction. I'd be inclined to add a 5mm spacer on the other side instead.

yea, i have the same concern, but i know that the wheel won't fit if pushed an extra 5mm out, unless i went to a dramatically smaller tire, which i am not inclined to do.

i guess we will soon find out, haha, i gave the shop the go ahead to do it.

you will be removing material from where the lugstud comes thru the wheel, effectively moving the seat of the lugnut closer to the back of the wheel, removing 5mm thickness of the wheel like that. its only 0.1968" thickness being removed, not much but its enough to think about drilling new holes to retain the oem designed thickness from lugnut seat to back of the wheel mounting surface... depends on the wheels and the material and design I guess, if it can be redone.

I'm surprised you cant just run a little more camber or pull the fenders a little bit to get the clearance you want. its not even a quarter inch!

I would have ordered the right offset no matter the color and then refinished all of my wheels to match whatever color I wanted to move to.

good luck mang!

If you could get some detailed pics of the hub area of the wheel in question (front and back) that'd help to make a determination of the safety of doing so.
