Fitting XXR 962 with center caps
Hi,
I recently got some XXR 962 rims in 17x7 and 17x9 for my FC and the grease caps stop the rim from fitting on at the front. I havent tried to fit the rears. I've heard some people say they remove the grease cap and run a spacer (5mm?). Just wondering if anyone has them on their FC and if they have a better solution? And did they have issues with the rears as well?
I did see this thread (https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-non-technical-pictures-198/sportmax-xxr-962-pic-request-751740/page2/) which said:

I made the center caps fit by grinding down the end of the stud that the wheel bearing is mounted to the hub with (the part that hits the cap). I cut it down to about 1/16" from the cotter pin that locks the castle nut. I then spaced out the center cap with some small washers and longer bolts, by a little under 1/16". Just clears (no contact with the stud) and the spacing of the cap is not noticable. I did have to (obviously) lose the dust caps on the wheel bearings.

Hey,
Not sure what more info I can give, that quote (from me) is exactly what I did.
Essentially you have to take the dust caps off (use a small drift, or a screwdriver if you don't have a drift, with a hammer, and pop them off). Then I protected the wheel bearing with a towel and cut the spindles down to about 1/16" from the cotter pin (don't want to get to close and risk that failing). Then I fitted the wheel with the center cap off. Finally I took some small very small washers and put them on the bolts that secure the center cap to the wheel (between the cap and the wheel itself) to space it out a touch. With that done, the center caps fit fine with no wheel spacers.
The rears fit fine. Also, you should look into hubcentric rings for those wheels on the RX7, since they aren't hubcentric.

Thanks for the replies. Did you fit the rears with the grease caps on digitalsolo? And you only had to do that grinding mod on the front right?
Just to follow this one through I'll post my results.
Fronts needed a 5mm spacer and grease cap removal. The center cap sits on normally. 225/45/17 just clears the coilover too so without the spacer it would be very tight. I might revisit it later and see what I can do to ditch the spacer and get a grease cap back on. It would probably require some aftermarket grease caps if there is something smaller available and require spacing out the center cap of the rim with something like a large washer. If it was sprayed blackand kept under 8mm thick i dont think it would be noticable.
Rears no spacer needed, grease cap still on, good fit with 255/40/17 in the rear. It's not flush but i prefer function over a slightly tougher look anyway.
I want to say thanks to all the guys who responded to PM's and/or posted here.
