Finish of OEM FD Wheels

Anyone know what finish Mazda used (paint or powder coat) at the factory on their 3rd gen wheels?

The stock wheels are painted silver (don't know paint code) or chromed.

There's paint on the stock wheels? Heck I thought the wheels were raw aluminum, like the UIM? Paint adds weight LOL

Well, it's paint chipping off my stockers, not aluminum oxide....

I posted this same question asking for the color code to the stock FD wheel finish a while back and got no responses and searching yielded nothing. If you're going to repaint your wheels, you're going to have to go to the auto parts store and eyeball the paints to match.

I'm just curious about the process and materials used at the factory in Hiroshima. Apparently they did paint the wheels. Unfortunately, the finish isn't holding up very well 10+ years later.

I'm thinking of having my wheels powder coated and then a urethane clear coat sprayed over them for protection. I believe that's how Panasport does it with their wheels (I have a set on my '85 GSL) and they look spectacular. I'm also going to look into a silver with more depth to it rather than the flat OEM silver.

GS+: I looked into powdercoating my wheels as well.

Check out this thread:

And check out the polished like finish on this powdercoated wheel. Nice, eh?
