Ok, I've searched all over, looked through archives, etc. I can't seem to find what i'm looking for. So far, what I've found is.....

My issues with these is that there is no thread dedicated to what fits the STOCK rim and maintains clearance front and back. I can get alot of info on what to run if I decide to throw 17. 18. 19 in rims on the car, but what about the rims the good lord gave me?

The size suggested by the extremely helpful (seriously, I'm not joking, that file is great) excel file is 255/40/16. This is the size I want to run, and I punched in the offset just for kicks. It shows I have clearance on a 9" rim. When I punch them into the 8.5 it changes all the calculations. It still looks like I can safely run 255 rear, 225 front, but I'll have to change the aspect ratio to make the 255 work.

So I suppose the question of the thread is, what are you folks running on stock rims and do you have any clearance issues? I don't want to run any wider than a 255 on the stock rims, but I'd like to stagger 255 rear, 245 front. I haven't found any threads that are able to tell me if that's a good or stupid idea. Thoughts?

 

There are really only two tire sizes that work on stock rims for street applications -- the stock 225/50 16, and 245/45 16. That's it. There are 265/45 16 race tires from Kumho. There are also 245/50 16 drag tires by BFG.

 

Yeah I figured I'd run the 245/45s because I couldn't find much else. I didn't wanna look wider because I figured the wheel width would limit width, and clearance would limit tire size.

Well if the answer is really that simple then I suppose I'll stick with the staggered 245/225 that I figured I'd have to go with.

 

Why not run 245/45s all around?

 

Didn't know if 245 would cause clearance issues. Plus I like the staggered look. I might run 245's all around if it seems that it would work out, but it seems like it's hard to get info with two replies in 24 hrs, and only one reply with info.

 

245s won't cause clearance issues. A 10mm differential won't give you much of a staggered look, if you like it that much get bigger wheels

Theres some pictures of my old 245/45 tires on there for you to look at. You wont get a staggered look with this tire size at all. Wider wheels is the way to go.

 

225F and 245R won't give you a staggered look, it will only make it undesireable to rotate the tires. Use the same size front and rear.

good luck finding them, it seems that many tire companies have stopped producing them in that size......

 

yeah about that.... I was all set to order my Yokohama AVS's. Seems they're on backorder. The Toyo Proxes T1S (I believe that's what they're called) seem to be the next best option.

 

They stopped making the T1-s, the T1-R is the tire you are looking for. I have them, 245's all around and are very happy with them.

You'll be better off with the toyos. I always thought the yoko avs's were overpriced.

Toyo Proxes 4's, 225/50/16

40,000 miles and still rolling. Love them, no noise, lightweight, good grip, and long lasting.

 

Hankook Rs2 come in 245/45/16. Yoko AVs and Proxes won't even hold a candle if you plan to autocross it.

 

i had hankook rs2's on my FC (i had FD wheels on the fc) and they were awesome.

i had 225/45/16

 

Would you guys recommend any of the 245 tires in the rain? as it rains a lot here in Vancouver, wet traction is a big concern for me

 

My Toyo T1-S have been very good in the rain. The new T1-R is supposed to be even better. It is not as grippy as the Hankook in the dry, but I know nothing of the Hankook's wet handling.

 

From what I've heard/read, wider tires are not necessarily better in the rain because they are more likely to hydroplane.

 

I don't autocross, but the Goodyear Eagle F1 is one of the best high perf. tires in the rain.

 

Ok, I think I'm probably going to regret this, but I got to ask a dumb question.

Hoosier makes an R compound 275/45ZR16 tire that they rate for an 8" rim, see

As near as I can tell from the fitment spreadsheet this will fit on the car, and the tire manufacturer says it will fit on an 16x8 rim, and the diameter, at 25.3 inches, doesn't look that different from the stock 225/50R16 street tire of 24.85 inches.

If I'm tracking the car, am too cheap to buy bigger rims, and am willing to give up some straight-line acceleration for extra rubber in the turns, why is this a bad idea, and why hasn't anyone already tried it? Too much sidewall squirm?

Flame away, and apologies ahead of time for not seeing what I am sure must be obvious. I am currently running the Avon R compound 225/50R16s (which work well and wear astoundingly evenly, BTW) and am getting a little greedy, I guess.

As I suspected, Tire Rack's numbers are wrong. Go to Hoosiers's website. You'll find the 275/45 16s are 25.6" tall and have a wheel spec of 8.5-10" wide.

You can run 245/45 16 Hoosier R6s or the new BFG R1s on the stock wheels. Either of those should be considerably better than the Avons.
