FD spring removal ?

I'm in the process of removing some H & R springs that i sold off of my car. I removed all 4 springs/shocks. On 3 of the sets i cannot get the nut off the top of the shock, as the whole shock piston moves!??! Am i over looking something here? Months back when i installed these springs the nut came right off. HELP!

Typically the end of the shaft is shaped such that you can grab it with a wrench or vice grips. Put a wrench on the nut and then hold the shaft while you break the nut loose.

Been a while since I have looked at a set of stockers but there are no flats machined on the end of the shaft or maybe a socket for an Allen wrench? There has got to be something that should stick out past the threads?

You do have the spring compressed so there is no load on the nut, right?

Damon, I like that spring compressor. It will definitely be joining my tool collection when I need to compress my springs. Thanks for showing it to us

If you cant find a flat edge to grab without stripping the threads, just take them to someone who has an airgun. I recall I inevitably stripped my threads.

If it's H&R springs on there, I don't think he'll need to compress them. I haven't had a problem with any of the lowering springs needing to be compressed (stock springs are a different story).

tt2323,

If you know of someone with an impact wrench (there has to be someone in your area with one), just take them over there and knock them off. Or, just take them to Midas and let them blast them off with their impact wrench.

mahjik is right (as always) you do not need compress H&R springs. I have a set myself. Try using extension pipe on the wrench for more torque and stick a long screw driver (sideways) into the end of the shock and step on it...then *twist*...that worked for me.

I know it's an old thread, don't shoot me.

Is there anything I need to know about removing some RB springs from a set of Konis that I bought? I sold the springs and I want to put some different ones on there. However, I'm worried that if I twist those nuts off the top, something is going to explode on me. Am I worried for nothing or is that a legitimate fear?

Thanks,
Jeremy

No issues. The Konis have flats on the shaft so you can hold the shaft still with a small wrench while you break the nut lose with a second wrench. Piece o cake. There's nothing to fear as long as there's no tension on the spring when you remove the large nut.
