Just wondering what ppl are running for autox wheel setups? my current setup is good for street but not practical for autox... I'm looking for either 16" or 17" rims and cannot decide on what r compound tires.. any help would be appreciated :p i'm also running jic coilovers with adjustable camber plates.

 

I used to run 205/40 R15 Hoosiers on vert wheels for ***** and giggles back when i had a pos na. At the time it was more grip than the suspension would handle.

But the rule of thumb from hanging with the locals is to fit as much rubber under the car as you can. Honestly with coilovers you should be able to fit 235's up front and 255's out back (with fender rolling), more up front if you 'pull' the fenders or add wider fenders.

 

My current project will be running stock FD wheels with spacers and Kumho V710s in 245/45-16. Still trying to figure out the coilover situation. Currently running Eibach Pro-kit w/Tokico blues and Tein camber plates. I used to run on 17X9 +35s with a 20mm spacer up front and Falken Azenis RT-615s in 255/40-17 on my old NA. It had amazing turn-in but lacked ultimate grip.

 

i def recommend V710's to the casual yet semi-serious autocrosser. almost as fast as A6's but last twice as long. literally.

your best bet for budget racing is 17x8 +30 mustang GT wheels (5 spoke 17# variety) with 245/40/17 v710's. go max camber up front, ~1.5 in the rear, and possibly roll the fenders a little bit. or 17x9 +24 and a little more fender work.

if you're vigilant you can almost always find lightly used 710s for really good prices. last 2 yrs i ran 285/315 combo, never paid more than $150/tire, and each set last a full season. i just switched to A6's to try to get on that contingency. qualifying takeoffs from BMW/porsche guys are probably where the 245's can be found.

vigiliant googling. my tires are corvette sizes, so i've found the last few sets on corvetteforum from some team. jbracingtires and the like should have stuff too

 

I was thinking about vert rims but I'm just trying to find some in my area but no luck so far... unless I buy a vert take the rims and put different ones on... lol. right now i'm 215/255 but they are crap street tires and get super greasy so I wanted to have an extra set for the track... I think I might go with the mustang rims... I happen to work with a couple 5.0L guys so maybe they can help me out! Thanks for the advice! anyone else have any rim recommendations?

 

Toyo R1Rs have treated me well. Pretty easy to find in a lot of sizes and not bank breaking.

if you dont want to swap tires at the events, any of the <200 TW street tires will do you good. I'd go with Kumho XS or Hankok RS3's. They're cheaper than the rest and work just as well. R1R's are iffy on heavier (stock weight) cars, they grease up pretty easily. killer cold/wet grip tho.
you should definately go with a square setup so you can rotate. just getting into autocross, its easy to excessivley wear one end of the car (either sliding around or understeering too much).

the mustang wheels you want are from 99-04 GT's. Typically go for 200/set with or without tires. they are easily the lightest cheap wheel. look like this:

 

I wouldn't mind swapping wheels at events. Those mustang rims should do the trick. so 245/40/17 work front and rear well enough?

 

Yup! If you can afford the coin, Advan AD08's, but if you're on a budget, RS3's or NT-05's will do.

 

I have Hoosiers on the my SSM FC. 245/40/17 / 275/40/17 17x8 front 17x10 rear... They work well, I'm still trying to work the kinks out. The 275 hoosiers in the back are hard to fit and it doesn't help that my springs are too short so it's too low in the back too. They work great though. I'm trying to find a set of 17x9s for the front.

street tires on the FC are 225/50/16 star specs on stock TII wheels (16x7)... they leave a lot to be desired. I autocrossed with them once or twice and didn't like them at all. not much grip and then they overheat and get greasy.. they probably just need to be on wider wheels though.

the corolla runs RS3s in the front and R1Rs in the back. The R1Rs over heat like it's their job, but their nice in colder weather. I run them on the back because they don't need to really heat up so I can go pretty fast my first run out without having to wait for them to heat up

The RS3s are awesome, they take everyhting you throw at them and ask for more and never over heat.

wheels on the FC are FN01R-Cs +35 all around, I think the rear has 5mm spacers. but they don't make FN01R-Cs anymore

I'd get some Enkei RPF1s They make them in every size imaginable, they're cheap, and light. what's not to like.

 

i meant wheels in general (first post :p) so you can run 17 x 10 in the rear? just some fender rolling or what?

yeah I have a few in mind... but what offsets are you running in the front for 17x8 and rear for 17x10?

 

depends on the tires and suspension! for stock fenders, best fitment is generally ~25-30 up front, and 35 rear.

 

they're both +35. I had 5mm spacers up front until I switched to my current coilovers with more inside clearance (coil-overs are for sale if you're interested *shameless plug*) the rears are really tall and rub on all kinds of stuff, currently I'm running a 5mm spacer to make them +30 to try to stay off the control arm, but it till rubs a bit.

I'm also running -3+ degrees of camber up front and about -2-2.5 in the back.

but again, josh is right, finding tires for a 17x10 kind of sucks. 275/40/17s are pretty tall... 295/35ZR17 are better, but you'll need wide fenders.

 

I'd run a square setup all around so rotation's are possible.

 

Yeah im running jic coilovers for now, I might change them though. I also have a friend with a fender roller so I might just roll mine. Thanks for all the info. I might just end up going 17 x 9 all around with 35 offset and run spacers in the front. Should make things interesting! Now to find rims...

 

also what would be my max tire size with normal fenders and jic coilovers with that setup?

edit: would it also make more sense to run a 30 offest in the front and just dismount and swap when I need to? (I have access to tire mounters and balancers so thats not a problem really. just more work for me :p)

+30 but you can always get wheels with higher offsets and get spacers, you can never go up in offsets though without machining your wheels....
