Question (f) 18x8, (r) 18x9 - 45 offset: Need Pro Advice

I am currently in process of finding a decent front and rear combination. I have read the archives, done some searches, and read posties. Very informative. Now to a couple of questions:

Found a good deal on the combination:
(f) 18x8, (r) 18x9 - 45 offset for both

Are the wheels' diameters too large for their width?
-- (ie: will it look off?)
Will I have any problems with this combination?
-- (ie: slight understeer)?
Would it be preferable (50/50 balance-wise) to run both 18x9?
-- (ie: is this too "small")?
What would be the best tire size combination (staggered and same from my examples)?

Thanks for your time and help,
Chris.

1. It will look great.

2. It depends on tire sizing. Wheel sizes itself will work well.

3. It depends on tire sizing as well. Staggered sizes don't necessariliy mean understeer or off-balance.

4. It depends on personal preference and your suspension set-up. I think experts will give you a good advice on that.

BTW, what wheels are you getting? Just curious

18x8 is too skinny for an FD. You would be much better off with 18x9 +45 all-around. You could run 255/35 tires with that setup.

With your 18x8/18x9 setup, you would run 225/40 and 255/35. The car will understeer slightly more than with same width tires all around. That may or may not be desirable for you.

I'm looking at some wheels from Discount Tire. Although the weights are not posted, they are probably on the heavy side. One is chrome, the other is not. Probably cast. Anyhow:

MB Design Rev (8" Max; +40mm)

MB Motorsports VR5S (9" Max; +45mm)

They are inexpensive options. The Rev is obviously all about the bling, but why not? Sounds like fun.

---> And are 8" really "too skinny" for the FD? Anyone have an 18x8" pictures for reference?

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Chris.

IMO, those wheels are not worthy of being on an FD. Not only is 18x8 too skinny for an FD, but I would lay money down that those wheels are at least 25 lbs each. If you can't afford good 18" wheels, then don't get them IMO. You can pick up quality 17" wheels for less money that will actually improve the handling of the car rather than degrading it.

Get whatever rims you want. If you don't race/autocross and aren't gun-hoe on racing from stoplight to stoplight, get what looks attractive to you.

Thats all the matters in the end.

We've discussed this before. I think reducing performance just for better looks is a sad way to go on a car like the FD. Especially when the wheels in question aren't even an improvement over the stock wheels in the looks department, IMO.
