Does a Great Street /Track tire really exist?

I want to drive to the track, run the snot out of my Fd and drive back home again using my stock rims.

As a second set the priority is perfomance for autocross.

Tire rack quoted me $103 for a set of 225/50 16 Kuhmos Excta MX on par with S03,s ?
But they also had Yokahama A038 , Victoracers and V700,s. Some come in 245 /45 which I would prefer.

They all look good and franlky I dont think I want to shave a set and a 1000 miles replace them either, so what are my options?

None. There is no free lunch when it comes to racing. Either suffer on street tires ... or step up to the real deal and buy race rubber, knowing that you'll have to buy a new set within the next 6-8 months. Gotta pay to play ...

It's sort of like asking if there is a great walking/running shoe. There are plenty that can pull double duty as both but none can do both as well as a shoe designed for one or the other.

A great street tire would be fine for my skill level.

Its just that my other set are cumbersome for track duty so lets put the stockers back on,less weight, spend $ on tires only, ect. thats really where I,m coming from.

Anyone has any experiance with the Kuhmo escta mx,s?

Give the Kumho MXes a try. At $103 each for 225/50-16, it's worth trying.

I absolutely loved my S02 pp's, but they're no longer available

why not just try s03s or yoko es100s? Not sticky enough for ya?

the kuhmo is a pretty good street tire, but there is better. that falken tire advertisies its the best street/track double duty tire around, and there was a guy at my autocross that said it was great, a 'cheater' tire if you will. take a look
http://www.stopandgotires.com/model.asp?model='Azenis%20Sport'

this tire should be pretty good for you, it will last relatively long, and the handling is not as peak at the limits as a true race tire is.

when they say "Meets SCCA street tire class requirements. " you know its good stuff

if im not getting these, i would probably get a pirelli p-zero, which is super soft at a tread wear rating of 140, but still not a race tire. but thats going to cost me some $$$!

Street/track duty was how the G-force KD's were billed, though i have no personal data.... plus they are expensive as hell and don't come in the sizes i want.. :-(

A032s are barely streetable, but noisy as hell.

Have you run on them? I have not run on the MX but the word is the entire carcass is different and is intended to be a true high performance tire, which the Ecsta never was (marketing aside). Kumho's competition tires are excellent products and they are moving some of that technology into their street tires. I absolutely hated the Ecsta but am willing to bet the MX is an entirely different beast.

Tried the yokos es 100,s on the daily, they wore out in 10 thousand miles and did,nt really impress.
S03,s bit spendy? and too good to get real shitty with on the track?
One of the big tire sites rates the Kumho,s pretty highly so thats my pick right now.

Kumhos wear out quickly, much quicker than Yokos A032R.

Granted they stick better than the Yokos, but I only get 2000-3000 miles out of the Kumhos while I've already logged more than 5000 miles on the Yokos with still 20-30% tread left.

You only get 2-3K miles out of the Ecsta Supra 712's or the MX's?!?!?!

You must be talking about the Victoracers, right? mp5 is referring to the 712's or the MX's.

I loved my s02s on the road course. Haven't tried the s03's yet, but with the higher treadwear rating, I don't like them as much as the s02. It seems like Bridgestone sold out to the masses a bit.....

I've got some Falken Azenis sport tires on my FC. They've got to be pretty close to a track tire. Try the Toyo RA-01's. I think they're DOT legal.

yea, I was talking about Victoracers. BTW, Toyo RA-1s don't come in large sizes. I was actually going to go with it.

Really? Please give the details on your rex. Have you ever roadraced or auto-xed with them on?

I know this is an old thread, but there is an answer now!

RE01-R !!!!!!!!

It only took 3 years for technology to supply an answer to your question.

Hmm, 16" wheels huh?

This drastically limits your choice of grippy street tires.

I would look at 3 street tires for track use in 16"

1) Bridgestone RE-01R
2) Hankook RS-2 Z212
3) Dunlop Direzza Z1 (they are coming out with a new one)
