It all depends what you want to do with the car, daily driver then no, daily driver/autox maybe springs or shocks, dialy driver/autox/track use I would very much consider it, all out track then yes you will need it.

What's your driving experience and what are you planning on doing with the car? If you're just driving on the street, I'd leave it stock, if you're interested in autox, upgrade the springs first, then as you get more seat time upgrade the shocks. From there if you get into track days you can still have a lot of fun on upgraded springs and shocks, but you could also upgrade to coil-overs at that point too.

I agree with what has already been said, and firmly belive most people are wasting their money on big buck susenpoins, when all they are looking for is a low stance.

I would recomend upgrading the shocks before the springs, unless you crave the low look, and can't afford both at once. Adding a stiffer spring will acclerate wear on the stock shocks. as they arn't setup to damp such a stiff spring.

as an FD owner looks at his car as to upgrades if he does his homework he will find that the suspension area provides the most benefit per dollar versus engine etc...

that is a bit ironic because the suspension being of racecar design, is so good to start with, yet still offers alot of upside.

i said benefit per dollar.

you can spend 4k on trick coil overs, $$$ on trick (Tripoint) swaybars blah blah blah.....

or.

spend about $200 on a set of springs.

i am here to tell you, Buy The Springs!

all the car needs is around 33% more rate front and rear and a bit of ride height drop (not too much) and the car Transforms.

the stock (non R1) shocks work very well w the upgraded springs.

you will swear you are driving a different car.

drive it for a few months.... run it at the track too. then if you are in the 5% of FD owners that want a bit more (and it won't be that much) trade them for a set of Tein coil overs. but buy a nice set of Eibach Pro Kit springs first...

do a search and you will find my suspension set up recommendations.

as to the stock shocks not being up to the job as was earlier posted, that could be the case if you slam some 500 pound springs in the car... but you wouldn't want to do that anyway. i do have a shock dyno and have dynoed all sorts of shocks along w 22 seasons of SCCA Nat road racing experience so chances are good you will be happy w the stock shocks.

good luck,

Don't spend any money upgrading until the rest of the suspension is put in good condition. All the bushings up to snuff? The upper shock mounts? The alignment?
