Question CWC Brake Ducts for FD

Anyone use these on his/her FD Rx7?

What do you think about them?

In looking at the pic, it seems, the ducts route air to the center of the rotor, not onto the rotor vent fins.

They appear to do a good job cooling the centers, but not the rotors' swept areas?

Comments?

Opinions?

Any racing duct directs its air to the center of the rotor. The rotor vanes are designed to pump air from the center out; the "exhaust" so to speak is the outside circumference. The CWC ducts appear to be a great design, but I have no firsthand experience.

I have them on my FD and overall they are a step up from the stock brake dust shields indirecting air toward the rotors. Duane was limited in his design because of the steering rack being in the way, so the opening isn't pointed at the cooling ducts from the front. If he could make the opening bend over the rack and then point toward the duct it would be spot on, but as is, I cut the lower lip of the opening so it didn't stick up somwhat. As far as helping the brakes cool off, I'm sure they do, I just don't do enough high speed/heavy loads on the brakes type driving like at a track event to give any feedback on their ability to cool the brakes under those conditions. I'd still say they'd be better than the stock set up though.
I did have to trim a rivet that was rubbing on my rotor on the front left but it was no problem. Construction wise, it was solid and nicely made piece.

OT: Thanks for all the help you posted re my wheel and tyre questions!

With a vented disc the correct way to cool them is with forced air fed directly into the eye of the disc, from the inside. This is often tricky and all but impossible on things like Skylines with driveshafts in the way. A plain disc should be cooled by a shroud splitting the air flow and dividing it equally over the inside and outside surfaces.

A vented disc part centrifuges and part paddle wheels the air flow from the eye to its perimeter. Discs with curved vanes in their core are directional, one with straight vanes usually are not. Hope this helps. CWC seem to do some nice bits and bobs but I have been on a mailing list of theirs and activity seems to have stopped.

Exclamation Thanks, fellas

Sounds like a no-brainer upgrade for those of us who track our cars with the stock brakes?!

Manny,

For your car, since you do alot of track events, with the stock brakes, it would be a good idea to get them.

BTW, not sure if you remember me, but I was the guy at the BMW track event at Road Atlanta with a FD parked near yours and the other 3 FD's but was just there to watch the FD's blitz around the track. I think there was 6 total FD's. Phil was one as well who was there.

Maybe some additional info there.

Pictures and notes of my installation of these ducts and several other installs from some friends cars using everything from Brembo Movit kits to the 6 piston M2 Wilwoods to my Mandeville setup and stock brakes. One observation I should point out though that although the duct does not align directly with the ducting from the front lip spoiler the duct does pull "higher" pressure air
from the wheel well area into the eye of the rotor. As the stock splash guard (which is all it is really) doesn't even clear the width of the wheel rim to collect air for cooling.

OH and I'm a roadracing/track guy not a 1/4 mile junkie. I've used them and am very pleased...in fact when air temps dropped below 45deg F I couldn't get my brakes to stay up to temp when at Watkins Glen last year. Never had any fade issues to speak of.
Regards,
Crispy
PS Chris W: dude, you gotta lose those copper brake lines....very bad things might happen!

I just removed the splash shields, and braking improved a lot ( 130 to 45 at summit point )

As someone said, the scoop is not effective, and the central inlet is shrouded.

Oh yeah, Dude! I remember you! I had taken a trip with 2 others, Phil Gray (Montego Blue PFS, Indy), and Norm Falick (Black R1 Cincy). Jeff Iafrati was there also with all the M2 stuff. Norm and I were in B group. Phil was in D group. Jeff was in A group. Jeff did a great job mixing it up with all the GT Porsche 993s that were there. Norm and I held our own with the BMW E36 M3s.

Road Atlanta's the SH*T! My first time through the "Bridge", I nearly crapped my pants!!

I hope to be back there once the motor and turbos get replaced. The car's not very trustworty right now with the high mileage motor and bad turbos. It's be a b*tch to be stranded in Braselton, although you all were very nice (must be your southern hospitality?) to visitors!

Until the next, swing her tail out wide, and drive her like you stole her!

Manny,

Are you doing anymore track events in the southeast area? I'd love to finally take the car out and have some fun in a controlled environment.

I won't be organizing any MDC events in the southeast. My area is mostly the midwest.

I encourage you to sign with your Peachtree BMW CCA and run at Road Atlanta anyway without other Rx7s.

You'll love it and at the same time learn some valuable skills in car control that you can apply on the public roads!

Good luck!
