which coilovers should i buy?

i have the opertunity to import some parts from japan, right now i'm trying to figure out which set of coilovers to buy. i've narrowed it down to 4 sets of used coilovers that i am interested in buying, but i'm having a hard time picking one set, because they are all very nice!

my FD is my daily driver so they will mostly be used for street (i dont mind a stiffer ride) and the ocasional weekend fun/ tracks if i can find one.

here are my choices, the order of the pictures matches the order below.

-aragosta coilovers with swift springs (i dont know the model as the info is in japanese)

-quantum t5-rs

-ohlins i.t.o.

-ohlins p.c.v.

i know that ohlins p.c.v. is a lower model, but they are over $1000 less then the i.t.o set.

so what do you guys think?

kyle.

If you want Aragosta, I can call my buddy at Knightsports as they sell Aragosta Suspension.

If you want Ohlins, I can call R-Magic to get it from them.

Personally, i would buy Penske 2 or 3 way coilovers, if not that...then Ohlins is my next choice.

It all depends on what you want out of the coilovers, and the price range.

Stay away from the sub $1000, chinese/taiwanese made, 80 way adjustable coilovers, and you should be good.

Out of those, I know the Ohlins are serviceable here in the US. Not sure about the others so I'd say go with the Ohlins.

Those are all from upgarage. I would be extremely careful buying anything from them, most of them dont list how many miles are even on the coilovers. My partner in Japan told me, that most tuners go to dump there parts there right before they need a rebuild or they might even need a rebuild. I would be very careful, not to mention you are looking at $400+ to ship them state-side. All the ones you have listed are going to be way to stiff for DD, the quantums and ito's are track coilovers and the swift springs on those Ohlins are too stiff. The PCV is a good choice for a dd.

i personally have the hks hipermax 3sport and for daily drive +track are ideal.

Im sure you can get them from the US without spendin all the $$$ on shipping

hksoutlet used to have the hipermax2 coilovers for 1100-1200 ...

Give them a call

Penskes are servicable in the US too.

Brand new, none of these coilovers are cheap either.

purerx7: you are right, these are from up garage, i do know that there are cases where parts are dumped there, if i get a bad set then thats my loss and i am willing to take that risk. i have already bought 2 sets of kei office coilovers for my FC from them and i have had only one problem with the first set and it turns out that it was my fault, the spring rates on them are just as stiff as the springs on these sets and i am perfectly happy with them. as for shipping, i am in the navy and shipping is no problem. if i take them to the post office on base it costs only about $55 to ship a set of coilovers (did it twice for the two kei office sets).

gracer7-rx7: this is one thing that i have thought of, if they turn out to have a problem then us servicing would be good! i will take this into consideration.

as for the rest, i'm simply looking for input on these 4 different sets of coilovers nothing more, if i wanted to buy brand new coilovers i would have read about others experiance and purchased a set already.

thank you, kyle.

my wife just finished translating all of the japanese kanji for me , i am now leaning tward the ohlins i.t.o., the spring rates dont look like they will be too harsh for daily driving and they havnt been used much, only problem is that they are the most expensive. so here is the info on these.

ohlins pcv: cusco pillow ball mounts, tein springs, they dont say the spring rates and they have a little bit of light surface rust.

ohlins ito: Cusco pillow ball, F:12kg/mm R:10kg/mm, 20 point adjustable shocks, $4200 msrp, they have only been run 3 times!

quantum t5-rs: cusco pillow ball, Espelir springs, Front rear both 16kg/mm, and some scratches on the surface.

aragosta: 15 point adjustable shocks, swift springs, F:14kg/mm R:16kg/mm

let me know what you guys think!

thanks, kyle.

Only buy what you can service in the states.

oh wow, i didnt know this thread got bumped again, guess i should subscribe to my thread, lol. i ended up going with the ohlins I.T.O. set, i havnt driven the car on any fun roads yet, just around town back in san diego, but on the softest setting with those spring rates the ride is excellent! compared to my stock 09 honda fit base, the ride in my rx7 is only slightly stiffer. very nice. after putting them on the car feels completely different, way better then on the stock shocks with tein s-tech springs! the only problem that i had with them, in the rear there was a 1" spacer below the pillow mount that, i had to switch the position of the spacer and the mount so that the spacer was on the top, otherwise my car was at 27" in the rear! the only reason it is a problem is, now that the top part is longer, i cant fit the plastic upper covers back on because they stick up about 1/4" too much. oh well.

Nice choice! Do you know what the difference is between the Ohlins I.T.O coilovers and the Ohlins PCV? I cant find any info on the Ohlins I.T.O setup.. From the pictures you posted they look the same...

i really dont know what is different, the biggest reason that i went with the set that i did was the condition that they are in. they had only been used for a short time. but they may have a different design on the inside or something like that. or they could be the same model, just advertised differently, they are older and no longer on the ohlins japan site, so we'll never know... but i'm happy with what i got!
