Depends on the type of coilover.

Some coilovers use external reservoirs to give a greater range of adjustment.

Some use them as an external oil reservoir to keep the oil cool. This is mainly for short stroke dampers.

It's all case by case.

The external res. helps to keep the fluid inside the shock from overheating.

If I may be so impertinent, whats the price on the Penskes, been quoted $825 per corner on the 2 ways so far. Wouldn't have open and closed lengths at hand either, seems to be hard to come by for some reason.

Though I will not directly address price, the $825 per dampers is sort of a "Manufacturer's Suggest Retail Price" (i.e. nominal price) commonly advertised for the simplest damper configuration. Please note this is just for the individual damper.

For specific pricing, I would refer you to ANZE Suspension <my choice>, Guy Ankeny Racing, SPR, Twins Turbos or Tri-point, all of who I've had contact with.

Yeah, there does seem to be a Penske sales "model".

Suggested it would require a digressive/linear set-up in this application, putting them in the same price range as 3 way/hydraulic bumpstop alternatives used by Mazda here, once everything was tallied up

http://www.mcasuspension.com/

Only issue, large diameter in that spec. 2 ways are available and used for circuit cars in a smaller diameter which helps with clearance. Penskes are 52mm I understand, so that will be limiting on suspension settings too.

Bit of gratuitous footage of the 8 with MCA they were running before it all went terribly wrong

the old 7 and the various econoboxes they promote are equipped with them as well.
