KD or KDW? They are two different tires, but frequently confused.

Just got my wheels and tires in. Haent had a chance to really push it, but the little bit I have been able to do is killer!! These things stick like glue!! Iget the feeling though that its breaking point is very sudden and going to take a little getting used to.

Took them out and thrashed on them pretty hard today. I am damn impressed. alot more gradual of a breaking point than I thought. there also very precise and go exactually where I point them. give alot of feed back. can feel exactually what there doing.
puting the Tokico ilumina shicks and racing beat springs on tommorrow. guess ill see how they really do them.
But yes this car sticks like super glue and kicks ***!!!

BFG G-Force KDs

The opinions floating around on the BFG G-Force KDs, describe the KDs as outstanding open-track tires that are usable on the public roads. Most open-track enthusiasts, epecially those with heavier cars (GM F-bodies, Mustangs, Vettes) wax poetery on the dry track performance of the KDs. The KD's dry stick rival R-compound tires such as Kumho V700s, Toyo RA-1s, and possibly Michelin Pilot Sport Comps. With a UTQG of 200, the KDs should last an entire open-track season.

The downside to the KDs would probably be tire weight, but hey there's no "free lunch" right

Anyhow, your intial opinion on the KD's performance on your FB Rx7, seem to corroborate with the general opinions floating around on the KD's dry track performance

Yea I will agree with you on the down side of the tire weight. The wheel they are mounted on weighs only 11.5 lbs. but with the tire mounted the compound is substancially heavier than stack (which by all standards is very light). I am also noticing that they have outstanding grip under braking! I am having a hard time even getting the tires to lock up. (not that a bad thing). Guess its time to upgrade the braking system.

Took my car to the local auto-x this yesterday.
Brought my girlfriend along so I could try and get her hooked and gave her a few rides.
They set up an extremley fast course just for some fun. I was just barely hit 60mph (which is flat flying for most of the courses that they set up) some of the modified Vets were hitting around 75-80. Kinnda cool.

Well needless to say Got to try out the new Kosei's and BFGoodrich G/force Kd's. I was extremelly impressed with these tires!! I was running within a half second behind the guys runnnig slicks. The only complaint is that my front tires were chunking up very badley. I think I just need camber plates.

Are the KDW's equally impressive?

I personally dont know. From what I have heard the KDW's are hands down the best performance wet AND dry tire you can buy. The KDW's come standard, on the Ford COntour SVT, and I think the The Mustand GT and Cobra (dont quote me on that last one).

851stgen12a,

How are your BFG G-force KDs on the street? How's the ride quality? Noise level? Wet performance?

I'm considering these in 255/40-17 as my next set of tires for my FD.

Apparently I will be the first FD owner with KD tires?

The FD on the G-Force games (SCC article a few years ago) had KD tires in size 275/40-17 on 10 x 17 CCW wheels all the way around--killed the competition.

I've been running the 245/45 KDW's on my stock 3rd gen wheels. Great all around tire! You truly are getting the best of both wet and dry traction.

Yep, had the KDW's on my SVT Contour and thought they were a very good all around tire. Towards the end of their life wet handling definitely suffered but tread depth was pretty low. Probably got around 25k miles of use from them. It was a bit hard to tell because I didn't run them year 'round; switched to Blizzaks for the winter.

Much as I'm excited about the BFG G-Force KD, I'm afraid the tire weight will be too high.

P-Zere Asymmetrico weighs 21.6 lbs in 255/40-17! That's got to be the lightest ultra-high performanc street tire in that size! At $174 each, I guess this is a no-brainer. Pirelli P-Zero Asymmetricos for me.

http://www.treadepot.com/tireswheels...ers/index.html

Total weight of wheel tire?

19.2 lbs for 9 x 17 SSR Integral A2
21.6 lbs for P-Zero in 255/40-17

<41 lbs for wheel/tire. This is 4 lbs lighter than my old AVS Intermediate setup in 255/40-17.

265/35-18 KD's on a 93 R1. Also KDW's 225/45-17s (experiment). Just so you know, the "K" means "Key". "D" means Dry performance. "W" equals Wet. I'm really impressed with the tire's performance. Just so everyone knows, I am a bit biased. The best advice I can give you is to try the tires against the competitors (B.S. SO3s, Pirrelli P-Zero series on 350zs) at the "Kick Ashphalt" event. It's a free event that was run in conjuction with the Import Revolution shows last year. I believe it's going to happen with HIN or Dub this year. I can get the info to anyone who may want it.

Sleep R1, I'm curious as to your issues with the weight of the KDs. Perhaps unsprung weight? I can provide you with more in-depth info on comparisions with competitors if you'd like.

Manny,
Where did you get the data that KDs are so heavy? I know P-zeros and Toyo T1-S are ultra-lights, but if you notice, the Toyo RA-1s, and A032's aren't exactly feather weights... they are generally in the range of most others like bridgestones and/or the KD's, and the KD's are the ONLY real street tire that i've ever heard refered to as "near-R-compound". I'd like to see a test between it, and some of the more streetable "R's", rather than other street tires.

FWIW, I don't see any weights on the BFG site.

Peter,

Just a guess, that the BFG will be heavy. They usually are on the heavy side.

I've read that the KDs are relatively heavy tires. Yes, any comparo you can provide would be great!

Gene Felber's site does not list the KD, but lists a 265/35/18 Comp TA ZR as 27 lbs, which isn't feathery, but about par-for-the-course.

Maybe BFGRX7 can share some factory specs??

My old AVS Intermedate (255/40-17) with 9 x 17, SSR IA2 was 45 lbs. My SSR IA2 weighs 19 lbs, so the AVS Intermediate was 26 lbs. The P-Zero is over 4 lbs lighter in the same tire size. All other performance parameters being equal, the lighter P-Zero tire is the better tire LOL

This is getting tight, according to tire rack ratings. Here we go.

Tire Handling Dry Wet
BFG GF T/A KD 9.2 9.5 6.7
BS PP S-03 9.0 9.3 8.8
GY E F1 GS-D3 8.9 9.2 9.1
Mich Pil Sport 8.9 9.1 8.3
BFG GF T/A KDW 8.8 9.1 8.2
Pirel. P0 Sys Asym 8.7 8.9 7
Kumho Ecsta MX 8.6 9 7.7
Yoko AVS Sport 8.5 8.7 7.9

From this, the KDs look like *** in the wet. If people think the KDWs are the best in both, then they shouldn't be comparing them to the bald ones they just had removed.
