I have never been able to find a listing for the weight of Volk AV3s (17x8,9) Several sites list the bolt patterns but no weights. Anyone that can shed some light before I pass up some lighter wheels for these?

I was told they weigh 55 lbs with tires, is that extremely heavy (245/45 and 265/40)

I don't know how much the AVS-3's weigh but 55 lbs for a 265/40 17 wheel+tire is pretty heavy in the FD world. For most tires, that rim must weigh in the mid-20 lb range -- heavy.
