Angry Anyone have problems with Goodyear F1's?

Although i have 18 inch Yokohamas on my Rx7, my dad is running 17 inch Mille Miglia wheels with brand new Goodyear Eagle F1 GS-D3's on his 2000 Volvo V70R. Here is my question to anyone who has these tires...

Are you having serious problems getting them to balance? Problems with road vibration?

We have already tried multiple alignment shops, wheel balancing shops (with REALLY expensive wheel balancing machines) and still the car has a bad vibration at 50+ mph. You can feel the steering wheel shaking badly and even some vibration through the seats. Even on the smoothest highways there is still really bad vibration. Tire Rack has given great service so far and even sent a new pair of Goodyears out to us to see if maybe the tires were defective. Still no better. WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON???? We had some vibration with the Pirelli P7000 Supersports we had on it before, but that was far less that what we have now.

Has anyone had these problems before or have any ideas of what we could do? Im stumped on this one....

I've had no trouble with F1 GS-D3's, 225x50R16 on stock wheels. No road vibration or balancing issues.

I don't have any clever ideas for you, except that if the new tires didn't fix it, look elsewhere. I can only offer a data point.

I work for a mercedes dealer and have seen alot of bad sets of goodyears. Especially the F1's. They also seem to get really noisy as they wear out.

Did they check the runout of the rims?

Considering you had vibration problems with your old tires too my guess is that it is not the tires. You may have a bent/out of round rim, bad bearing, bent axel, damaged steering linkage... Unless the tire is very much out of round, proper balancing should prevent vibration. Do you have lots of wheel weights? This is normally a sign of a bad tire or rim.

Normally an alignment shop can tell if ther e is suspension damage, or bent wheels.

I´m agree with Dis1 -Silver Bullet- it could be another problem, maybe the diff. Why don´t you try to use stock wheels to check the noise, will be easier identify the problem.

we still have the stock wheel and tires and they dont exhibit the problems that the new tires/wheels have.

wheels are 17x7.5 Mille Miglia Spyders if that helps at all. I thought about the wheels being bent, but none of the balancing shops said anything about that being a problem!

So frustrating!

Sounds like a wheel problem to me. It might be just one so try swapping out one wheel at a time with your stock wheels to find the problem. Then take the wheel and tire to a wheel shop. Many tire shops have min-wage punks doing the tires so it doesn't surprise me the problem could have escaped their attention. Basically take the matter in to your own hands.

i was going to buy wheels online from wheelma.com so i called them up about several wheels and they told me that they dont have wheels for my car because of the (offset) and they said if its not the right offset i would get vibration so i ended up getting wheels of a diff site... so check up the offset of your wheels

Have you tried swap front wheel to the back? Just to see if the front wheels are the problems.

Ok, found out what the problem was.

Turned out that then NO LONGER MAKE the 215mm 17's anymore. Why is this? because of the very problem we were having! Tire rack gave superb customer service in taking care of us (which is why i will continue to buy from them). Went to a 225 17 and rides flawlessly now. Just thought id post an update so that anyone considering these tires knows the full story. Fantastic tire now that we changed to the new size. Highly reccomend them...

How are they balancing them? If there is not a weight on both sides of the wheel you are just "Static Balancing" which will not take care of most high speed issues. "Dynamic Balancing" involves placing weights in a diametrically opposed manner to the heaviest sections of the tire after taking into consideration the width and diameter of the wheel in which the tire is mounted.

I will capitalize this not to yell but to express my point.

IF YOU HAVE CHROMED WHEELS AND YOU DO NOT WANT THE FINISH DAMAGED PLACE THEM IN A BAG IN THE ATTIC AND PUT A SET OF WHEEL YOU DO NOT CARE ABOUT ON THE CAR.

The wheel is the single most misunderstood and most abused portion of the motor vehicle. The light the wheel and tire the more responsive your steering input. The better balanced your wheel and tire the higher the attainable top speed. The correct diamater tire and wheel the better your car accelerates and stops. The proper speed rating and tread design of your tires the more happy the owner is!

If you are getting a lot of noise and vibration out of a set of F1GSD3s then either they are spotted from a panic break, cupped from improper/bad shocks/struts, cupped from improper rotation, cupped from improper balance, or have an issue with a migrating belt. I have sold roughly 1000 Eagle F1GSD3 (and Assurance Featuring Triple Tred Technology which is the same carcass but an 80k mile all season version) and have two migrating belts, one individual ride complaint on four tires and four flat spotted tires resulting in a pissed off dude, THe new manufacturing processes for these two tires have very few ride issue comebacks.

I will not lie there is a lot better tire out there. For the mileage you get out of an F1GSD3 you would expect them to stick a bit more but they are more than competent street tires.

If you are near Mid Michigan stop into Northwest Tire and Service (5600 Cedar Street, Lansing, Mi) and ask for John, I'd love to help you out with your tire issues.
