Advan A-048

Hi,

I've been using these tires for the track on my FD this passed season. I will need to replace them again some time next season. In my opinion they were great tires. They allow a good deal of slip before letting go once fully warmed, and has a great turn in. But from my internet research it seems like everyone on this side of the planet hates them? One big point that came up was the heat cycling, which from my personal experience is pretty decent so far. So I would like to know what I am missing out by going with this tire without getting something like Hoosiers?

Thanks

If you're just doing track days and not competing, there's no reason to bother with Hoosiers. In fact, you'd be better off with a lesser tire like Victoracers, Toyo RA1s or something else that will last a while.

I don't have experience with the Advans, but I know they are pricey as mentioned above.

For autox, it seems like most people go with hoosiers or V710s. The only advans I usually see are AD07, which are used in a street tire class.

FYI... Talon Tire in Montreal has them for a reasonable price. Google them. They have online pricing.

tire rack is cheaper by 10 dollars on the A048 and around 50 dollars on the Neova's.....damn Yokohama's are pricey these days! The weakening US dollar isn't helping much either.

Sure, many owners have. All you have to do is use the search function. However, for the price, the Advans just aren't that great which is why very few people use them here. They are more expensive than offerings from Toyo or Kumho, yet they aren't any better; and in some cases worse than the other manufacturer offerings.

For the non-hardcore track guys, Toyo RA1's seem to be the tire of choice. It has similar performance but much better wear characteristics. For AutoX, Kumho's 710 seems to be king.

I've ran the AO48's. I thought the wear was very good and the grip was not so good. The compund we get in the states is a "harder" compound. I've seen yoko makes the Ao48 tires in other compounds, but I've not seen them available here. If your going to run track days, I'd stick with the 100 treadwear group, Nitto Nt-01 or Toyo Ra-1's/R888.
If your gonna race, then hoosier, 710, bfg r1, etc. treadwear 40 tires.

Thanks for the input. I also heard that R-comps are usually narrower than a similar size street tire. Is this true? I had 255's on a 9" rim. it seems to fit as well as when it had street tires.

It depends on the tire and the manufacturer

Is performance suppose to increase by going with the smaller tire within the factory specs for a rim? That was what I heard, but dunno by how much/whether its worth it.

There is very very very rarely any performance gain from going to a smaller tire.

The performance gain would be if in a severly underpowered car the lower rotating inertia of the smaller tire outweighed the traction gains of the larger tire.

Even in Auto-X in dog slow underpowered G stock cars the widest tire possible is fitted to stock rims.

Now, if you mean a performance gain from a wider rim on the same size tires; then yes, there is almost always a performance gain as it flattens out the tire carcass adding contact patch as well as increasing responsiveness by stretching the sidewalls tighter at the expense of slightly sharper break away characteristics.

There is a limit to this as well as each tire has a sidewall to tread surface hingepoint and stretching too far can cause really bad wear and performance as the hinge is opened too far.

Vote here for Toyo R888, they warm up fairly quickly and are less expensive than the Advans. They do wear out a little quicker though.

I forgot to mention i used these mainly for lapping events, so warm up is not a problem, since i get warm up laps.

What kind of rims would fit a 275/285 on an my fd? I was worried because i read that if u go for a smaller rim it feels more squishy.

I use 285/30/18 on a 10" wide rim.

I've had pretty good response with Advans here. I have a few guys that run them on the track for auto x and I even had a friend run them on the drag strip with decent results
