Question 99 JSpec 17" wheels - info

Does any one know the offset and weight for the 17x8 fr and 17x8.5 r 99 wheels. Will the 17x8.5 fit up front? I would like to go 17x8.5 all the way round with 255s. Is that too much tire in the front. I have stock suspension so would the wheel and tire clear the front or will they rub? What do think of that setup?

Thanks

I run 9 x 17, 45-mm offset, SSR Integral A2s with 255/40-17 Yokohama AVS Intermediates with no problems.

8.5-inch wide rim is too narrow for a 255 IMO...

FYI the wheels in that pic aren`t the 17" wheels. Those ones are 16 x 8" . As far as I know the 17s are within a pound of the stock US spec wheels.

From my '99 parts book the RS 17" wheels are:
Front: 8x17 50mm
Rear: 8.5x17 50mm

Same offsets (50mm) as the stock 16x8's.

Also, that looks like the picture of an RS on page 5&6 of the '99 brochure.

In which case those are 17's.
I can even see the wheel sizes:
17x8JJ 50
17x81/2JJ 50
cast into the rim (as they are on our stock wheels).

Also the lower sidewall height of the rear tire (255-40-17) vs the front tire (235-45-17) gives it away as well.

I also like those wheels and am considering them as street wheels to give myself a break from the noise & harsh ride of my track wheel/tire setup.

The best sources for 96+ parts are:

Corksport
http://www.corksport.com/

or

Mazdaspeed Motorsports (Mazda Comp)
http://www.mazdamotorsports.com/weba...ervlet/Catalog

I have delt with both and the service/prices/shipping costs are great.

I just bought a set of 8.5s from Jspec7. They just came in the mail today. I can't wait to go home and check them out. I plan on trying 255s on all 4 with stock springs. If anybody would like to see how things go I'll have the info on my site at some point.

Keep in mind that 255's are not all the same size, in diameter or width. A good example is if you look up all the 285/30-18's on tire rack and look at the specs of each tire, you will find very large differences not only between brands, but within the same brand depending on the spec. I found 3 different 265/35-18's, all three were Bridgestone S0-2 (not PP), take a look at:
http://www.tirerack.com/tires/Spec.j...l=Potenza+S-02

The Bridgestones that the OE specs can be radically different, so 255's that Mazda uses on the 99 rx-7 are a perfect fit, but say Toyo's 255 are not.

cheers

what is the OE tire that mazda uses on these wheels? I would be using 255/40/17 S0-2s

I am not sure what their dimensions are since they're not imported here, but its S0-7. They were the OE tire in 225/50-16 in the US, if not worldwide, but I really don't think you can find them anymore. I suggest you call Tire Rack.

I am baised and like Bridgestone, so I would recommend S0-2 as a good alternative.

cheers

Actually the photo shows the 17" wheels. They were standard on the RS trim shown above.

cheers

The '99 Rx7 RS tires were Bridgestone Potenza S-07s. They were 235/45-17 and 255/40-17. They were a very similar tread pattern to the OE Rx7 R1 tires, Expedia S-07s, except the Expedia S-07s came in 16s, while the Potenza S-07s were 17s...

I don't think the S-07s Potenzas are available in the US...

That's an excellent observation SleepR1, the distinction between Expedia vs Potenza...I totally missed that. But both were called S-07.

I am told that the current S-03, recently released, is only temporary. It was due to marketing pressure that it was released, otherwise the S-02 is still the better tire. The S-03 is only a stepping stone to the RE-711 which is due for release in the US market by March 2003...I can't wait for the RE-711. Its been in the Japanese market for almost 2 years now. If anyone is considering buying tires, they might want to hold off this winter...unless they live outside the snow belt and just need tires now.

cheers

Any info on the RE711s? Tread pattern? UTQG? You know--all the juicy bits

Its advertised in rx-7 magazine and most japanese car magazines...the tread pattern looks halfway between the old RE-71 and the S-02 unfortunetly my scanner is down, but I found this link:

http://bs.asia-oceania.bridgestone.c...?pid=55&agid=3

I am sure, by the time they arrive here, the marketing guys will find a better term to use than what the above link refers to as "donut technology"... I'll let your imagination run with it..."the new standard on police cars...Bridgestone with Donut Technology"

cheers

Another option is to check Jesse Lau's site out (www.4jspec.com) since he regularly has 97 to 99 rims for sale at a bargain price of $1199 shipped usually. I got a set from him and all were in great shape, no curb rash or dings anywhere. Saves some cash over Corksport as well.

Cool Too Narrow IMO

The RS and Spirit R wheels are too narrow for the money, IMO. I think you should run at least 255/40-17s all around on 9 x 17, 45-mm wheels, if you want any kind of serious wheel/tire upgrade

I had the wheels weighed. The 17x8.5s are between 16.9 and 17.1 lbs each. I paid 1200 shipped.

Dis1,

I just got a set of 99 spec wheels..
Reading this thread, it seems like I can't put 255/40/17 in the rear?? If so, what kind of tires??

Thanks

I've had '99 spec RS wheels on my FD for the last year. They fit fine. The tire sizes are fine. I actually got 265's for the rear instead of 255's. The only reason I have a problem is in dealing with the lowered suspension. They work fine with stock suspension.

Anyone know where to get JDM 99 spec suspension parts that are designed to go with these wheels????
Are they the same as ours or different???
