Question 94 rx7 lowered and koni adj shocks

I bought my car lowered(unknown brand) and also has koni adj shocks.

I am on stock 16s and tuck hard ....rubs if too fast or too tight of a turn...way to low hit a lot...

point is i want to raise it up some and put 17x7.5-8 front and 17x9 rear. I do not know how much lower mine is from stock .

suggestion on what lowering spring to get.???..i cant afford much so no coilovers yet...

what is the normal lowering amount- 1in?

help-newbie and new to suspension too...

If you have koni yellows there is a way to adjust the height of the lower spring perch on the strut body. You'll have to remove the assembly and compress the spring w/ a spring compressor. You can them move the perch up by removing the retainer and putting it at one of the higher settings.

This might not solve the problem, but its a start.

What is the ride height measured from the ground to the fender lip?

What color are the springs?

What perch is the spring perch set on the Koni shocks? There are 3 perches. They should be set to the highest.

You most likely have aftermarket springs on there and are probably not at the highest perch. I believe both Eibachs and H&R springs have text on the side of the coils that tells you the brand and part number. Go look for it and see if you find any other markings - such as paint stripes, spots, dots or anything like that. Take pics.

You will need to take a good hard look at the way the bottom spring perches are installed. Some people don't pay attention installing these and they make two common mistakes:
1. They set the perch to the wrong level or different levels side to side.
2. They also install the bottom spring upside down and sometimes differently from side to side.

Correcting this will involve taking the suspension apart and installing correctly.

anyone have pics of what the shocks should look like assembled correctly?

I understand from researching front should be on top perch and rear on mid.

How do i tell if perch is on the right way and not upside down?

thanks for your help!

As you have found and is evident in the pics, the lower spring perch is set at the middle setting.

Those are probably not stock springs but not sure exactly which ones they are.

As you can also see in the pics, the lower spring pad is worn and cracked which can also effect ride height. I suspect the the upper shock tower mount is also worn out and can contribute to ride height oddities.

Take a look at the lower spring perches and make sure they are all installed in a similar manner. At one point on my old FD, the PO had installed a few spring perches upside down - which will also effect ride ride height.

i found springs...tein and eibach one is 1 inch and other is 1.4/1.5 on ebay $200 to $260ish.
How much are the pads top and bottom. I am assumeing one inch lowereing springs n new pads well raise it enough.

or I could sell current setup and get d2 racing type rs coilovers for $850. I not sure if I can afford it depends on what I get for current setup.

were would i get pads from?

Replacing the pads and the upper shock mounts with new parts will have a small effect on ride height. ~ 1/4" or so. Changing the spring perch setting from the middle setting and placing it on the upper setting, will raise it about 1/2" or maybe a little more. This will place you at a reasonable ride height. Stock parts can be bought at a discount from Ray Crowe at Malloy Mazda. his number is the FAQ thread stickied in the 3rd gen forum.

Mahjik's suggestion about the Ground Control coilovers over your existing Konis are much better than any other options you mentioned.

BTW, looks like Eibach springs from the part number. They typically lower the front a lot more than the rear.

emailed about pads.

Think i am going to move all four to top perch and get new pads and see were it sets. I am straped for money so hope it raises enough until i can save for a less lowering spring.

thanks for everyones help!

They are the standard Pro-Kit springs. The front springs 5525.001 and the rear will be 5525.002.

From my experience, the Eibach springs lower the front more than 1" but the rear less than 1". About the only off the shelf springs you'll find besides the stock springs which are not as low or lower, would be Tein H-Tech springs.

ok so i will raise front to highest perch and see were it sitts ...then if still low new pads and raise rear to highest too ....if that not fix it enough then i save for ground control or coilovers.
