88 RX-7 Needs Struts

I own a 1988 GXL with 100K miles on it. It needs new struts. The dealer is quoting about $1,000 to replace them with the OEM struts.

Are there any cheaper alternatives? I would do it myself, but it looks like I need a hydraulic press to compress the springs.

Any suggestions out there?

I would suggest that you search the 2nd gen section as well as in this section (as this is a VERY frequent topic). Use keywords such as shocks/struts, etc.

Also, look into AGX shocks. That should help you.

Does anyone know which aftermarket struts will be compatible with the auto adjust suspension system on the 88 GXL?

None. You get rid of that **** and buy KYB AGX struts. Basically just unbolt the actuator from the top and remove the suspension.

AGX's are manual adjustable and give you 4 settings up front and 8 in the rear. These can run you around $400.00 or slightly less for the whole set. These are great struts.
