3rd Gen Stock Rims / Changing Appearence

I have aquired a second set of OEM Rims for a 3rd gen. and have a few questions.

Can additional clear coat be added to the silver rims so brake dust will wipe off easier?

Has anyone painted the rims or had them painted and then clear coated? If I go this route I would be most concerned about durablility?

What about powder coating? How well does this hold up?

Thanks
Shawn

clearcoated

Wantarace,

So you painted your rims and then clearcoated them?
Did you do the spraying yourself? If so want kind of paint / clearcoat? And did you have to remove the original finish or just paint over it?
The rims look good.

I would highly recommend getting them powder coated as opposed to painted. Even with a clear coat, it does not protect the paint from the sun. When I bought my FD it had red painted rims. This was (supposedly) a very high quality industrial type paint. Heh. Two of the rims looked pink from fading, and they all had chipped areas and scratches.

I stripped the paint and then got them powder coated gunmetal. WOW! These things look freakin sweet. Not to mention the coat is hard as a rock and wont ever fade from the sun. No need for clear coat too. Brake dust wipes right off. The guy who did my rims drove a 90 VW GTI with black coated rims. He said he coated them 8 years ago, and they still look brand new.

That looks very nice, Want2race! I have always liked red cars with black wheels, but the gunmetal looks even better.

Hawk HPS brake pads will solve your problem with excessive dust and cleaning.

Or EBC. I'm still working on terms with them to be a big distributor. They messed up on one of my orders, so I'll feel them out in the next two days and if all goes well, we can start doing good deals on Monday.

We do powdercoating too, but we're on the westcoast. Powder is definietly what you should do. The silver will not turn out like the silver paint you are used to seeing. It won't be as brilliant. But a dark color is the ****, PDCoating is the only way to go.

Thanks,
