Question 3mm clearance enough between caliper fronts and backside of rim spokes?

After test fitting my Mandeville BBK, they came within a whisker of rubbing. I opted to have some 3mm spacers machined by a forum member, and damn are those things thin. The problem lies in my Fikse FM5s.....if I push the rims too far outward I am going to have fender rubbing problems, as they are pretty damn close as-is.

The question is, will 3mm (less than 1/8th inch) be enough between the caliper and rim to allow for any deflections, turning under load, etc?

I'd say it's ok. Have you ever looked at a stock Subaru WRX STi front wheel and brake assembly? There's barely any room there at all. It's gotta be about 3mm between the spokes and the caliper (using the eyecrometer from memory). So if OEM's are comfortable with that small amount of clearance I'd think it's ok, and those Fikse's are probably stiffer than the STi wheels.

Take a little off of the caliper for clearance if its just an edge or corner. It may clearance itself driving just keep a close eye on it.

I agree, 3mm is our bare minimum. Luckily oyu have a well constructed forged wheel that shouldn't have gobs of deflection. The FM5 looks like a fairly rigid design, in terms of spoke architecture. Our wheel manuf say 5mm for liability safe measures. hehe. But 3mm should just barely do it.

tty soon, Rishie

you should be o k. if you have any rubbing it should be minimal and would point you to just the right spot on the caliper to get out your Nicholson file and go to work.

just remember any filings that you take off the caliper are unsprung weight
