is 285 on a 10" w rim to wide for an fd's stock rear fender?
does it look ok or does it stick out? i know
275's are fine but never really seen anything
wider than that with stock fenders.

I think you'll have some rubbing issues. I was told you either need to run 285/30/18's or 265/35/18. Max Cooper I believe is running 285's search for his name and you should find out some more info.

 

With the right offset you shouldn't rub in the rear w/ a 10" wheel or a 285/35, though folks commonly use 275/35 or 285/30.

It's funny how you post a thread asking if 275 or 285s will fit in the rear (they will, it's a proven fitment) and then tell Manny that 295/30s require flares......it seems if you knew one answer, you would know the other.

FWIW, Kevin Wyum ran 315s on the rear with the stock bodywork. He had to modify the trailing arms to fit the width inboard.

I'm positive its doable with the right offset... problem will be finding wheels in that offset with out buying 18" Fikses or Forgelines.

With my 17x10" +44s, theres at least 3/8" room inboard even with the stock trailing arms.

I never saw any more from Herblenny about the 10.5" SSR comps...

The rear Comps came from a TX vendor who used 79.5 to 67.1 mm centering rings. The rear 10.5 wides are 43 mm offset as I recall from Phil's descriptions?

I'm thinking how nice 9.5 x 17, 42-mm offset front, and 10.5 x 18, 43-mm offset SSR Comps would be with 255/40-17 and 295/30-18 P-Zero tires fr/rr

 

I would think it'll look strange if your sidewalls are smaller in the rear than front. Functionally, it should be fine.

I was thinking of doing the same with 255/40/17 front, 275/35/18 rear.

Yes, I know that the rear is much taller, but the reality is, i've already lowered the rear much more than the front (the wheel wells and fender heights are very different in size), so worst case scenario is that i return the car to the factory proportions in terms of rake front to rear.

 

Yeah, someone's done this before, and you're right, the tire sidewall has to stay the same relative height as a ratio to the wheel diameter.

This is the main reason I went with the 275/35s on the rear. I actually wanted the slight gearing change with the taller tire. How wide would a 10.5" wheel support? Can you go with 300+/30s back there on a wheel like that. Or would a +50 and 10.5x18 with a 300+ width tire just be too wide?

The 275s of the ES300 I got are very wide for this width. I'll be posting pics tonight in another thread and can show the 295 next to it (now unmounted).

 

You won't find a 300-section tire. The generally go from 295 to 305 or 315.

For a 10.5" wheel, i'd max it at 295/30/18. I'd want an 11" for anthing bigger.

 

I meant 300+, not exactly 300. I was thinking 305 or so to get the sidewalls close to the same in a stagger setup.

 

 

Not sure if you guys remember Kevin Tan but he had the 285 on the back as I posted previously. There were tight, but the CCW's obviously had the correct spacing...

Of course then theres Kevin Wyum who has 17 x 11 w/ 315 tire and up front he has 17 x 10 w/ 275 ( I think thats the wheel width up front) . Now thats impressive up close. He all shared Wyum's garage one Winter back in 97 so I got a good look at both of there wide wheel setups....I too got the wide wheel fever and run 17 x 9.5 w/ 275, but thats on a 91 Turbo ....

 

It would be cool if Kevin Wyum (since he's back now) would share some details and pics on his 17x11" rear setup. There seems to be more interest in this extreme size than there used to be what with cars making 500 rwhpo and all. As I remember, he had to keep his car kind of jacked up to make it work. I know another person w/ 17x11" CCWs, but they are mounted w/ 275/40 hoosiers.

It might be easier to run an 18x11 now, what with all the 18" tire sizes that are available now.

 

Here's a pic of the 17x11 with 315s that Kevin ran. The trailing arm is spaced over to make it fit....that's a wide tire!

 

Kevin did end up running a 5mm spacer w/ longer studs if I remember right. He also had to, lets just say fix the outer fender lip to allow the tires not to rub... They do fit though... He also used the M2 trailing arms, of course. But, ya alot of tire on his car...
