I know I'm probably gonna get flamed by a lot of guys here, but is anyone running 20 inch wheels?

I got my car back today and looking at my 18's, they look small to me. And if I went with 19's, that's only a half inch bigger on the top and a half an inch bigger on the bottom (when you are looking at the face of the wheel ofcourse) and I don't think you would visually see the difference between 18's and 19's.

Anyhow, I'm thinking (just a thought), 20x10 in the rear and 19x9 in the front. Anyone have pics of 20's on their (or someone elses) FD?

If the ride was TOO horrible, then I could always sell them. Good thing about wheels- they are easily changed.

Ok, I'm over the shock AND the horror of your initial post...the answer is "NO" I do not know of any FD owner with Dubs. There is a guy with 19s, but his car is show-only.

BTW "Dubs" refer to 20-inch wheels. There is a magazine devoted to 20-inch wheels, called "Dubs". Dubs are very much part of the urban and hip hop culture, where Dubs are all about the bling bling, and less about the performance. I was horrified to see Dubs on a Ferrari with Gucci monograms all over the yellow paint (Lord Have Mercy! Is nothing SACRED to anyone in the hip hop world???)

 

Oh, the horror of seeing your puny stock brake rotors and calipers peaking out of the 20-inch rims. Lord, God have mercy on your soul!

Nope, they just wrapped the outside of the wheel w/ a couple layers of electrical tape.

I know of ONE FD with 20's. It's silver, and has air ride suspension... His name is Tom Ngo, and belongs to Team Hybrid of SDCA. Last pic I had was of him on 20 inch chromes...but I have this link to what I guess he is running now, 19inch Blitz wheels...ugly too...funny thing about his car tho...its like he buys every brand of aftermarket companies emblem and puts it somewhere!!! In these pics he has TOMS and some other ****....ToyotaMotorSports..give me a break! And when he was in Import Tuner(that or Import racer) his front strut bar had a MUGEN badge!!

Big wheels only look good on a car thats so low it's barely streetable, if at all. Not necessarily only for "Dub's Magazine" subscribers either. The GT-1 LeMan's cars have some pretty big wheels compared to the size of the car, this is, of course, with about 1 inch of suspension travel and 2 inches of ride height.
I say stay with 18's, unless you plan on lowering the car to the "show" level. Maybe 19's in the rear if it doesn't make the rear of the car look jacked up.
Show cars are so deceptive. I can't imagine building such a sexy car and never driving it.

 

19s are the limit...

 

I've only seen 19" wheels on Tom Ngo's silver RX-7. But that doesn't matter for him because he raises the car when driving and lowers it at the show with air adjustable air suspension.

I've seen 19" Buddy Club wheels on a 350Z and that's a much taller car.

 

this guy i know who co-owns a local shop near here has 19" Advans on his silver FD... yea it looks hot as hell, but there are issues like 1. he has to plan ahead his routes to anywhere to take the smoothest possible roads, and 2. he has quite a few engine mods, and anything above 4500rpm puts him sideways pretty much, the tires have so little flex, it's just not getting traction...

20s would be out of the question... i think he is considering getting some 17 or 18s and just using the 19s at shows...

i've been searching for a while here, and i can't find the thread, but someone posted a while ago, a vid of a candy apple pink FD from australia, total show car, it had 20's on it. and i know it's your car and all, but putting 20" wheels on an rx7 is like putting 15" wheels on a monster truck, you can do it, but it kinda defeats the intended purpose of the vehicle, having said that...

Hehehehehe, I knew I was in for a thrashing here . Ok, I'm not really gonna put 20's on my FD. I was just bored and thinking of "what can I do next" to make my car a little different. I've been looking for many months now and I think I'm gonna go with 18x9 FR and 18X10 RR Work VS-SS. I'm tempted to go 19's in the rear and 18's in the front, but they don't come in 19". Anyhow, do you guys like these wheels? Anyone have weights on them? Do you think they would look good on my silver FD?

Ok, I feel better now. Those wheels look like what you have now? I say, quit messing around, and get Fikse Profil 13s in 9.5 x 18 with 265/35-18 front, and 10.5 x 18 with 295/30-18 rear. These are superb quality wheels, lightweight for their sizes, super strong, with enough bling bling for even the rap culture to take notice...

9.5 x 18, 50 mm offset up front

10.5 x 18, 45 mm offset for rear

You'll need to roll the rear fender lips upward for guaranteed clearance of the fender lip away from the tire shoulder blocks.

Tire sizes should be 265/35-18 for the 9.5 x 18 (fronts); and 295/30-18 for 10.5 x 18 (rears). Pirelli P-Zeros and Continental Sport Contact 2s come in these sizes. Both are rear OE fitments for Porsche 996 Carrera and Carrera 4S, respectively.

BTW, you will be the only FD owner I know of running this setup. AFIK, there is no FD owner with 295/30-18s on 10.5 wides in back. Talk about meat...you'll have the beef steaks in back, baby!

FWIW, I'd max out the negative camber to give the tires the nice tucked-under-wheel wells look.

So go out and do it! Rishie should be able to get you a discount on the Fikses, although price should not be a concern, since that's just the way it goes, if you want to have wheels/tires no other FD owner has at the moment

 

Right on buddy!!! This is definitely right up my alley; I wanna run an aggressive set-up. But the thing I can't get over is the lip the Fikse wheels have; it has that step in it. I want my lip to be flat and deep. I'm still open to suggestions

Hmm, that step is not an issue in my opinion. Besides you'll be flying by most of the onlookers, so all they'll see are a set of shiny blinglalicious Fikses blurring past them

 

Keep the wheels you got and do something elso with the $$$$. I am getting ready to wetsand my entire car and put 3-5 more coats of clearcoat on it. Wet-sanding in between of course. Then layer it with some new protective stuff that I bought. (supposively it eliminates the need to wax your car, kinda like a permanent beed) They use it at the Lexus dealerships as $600 option on a brand new car. Its like kevlar or something, I cant remember and dont wanna go to the garage. Total is looking at $2500. Just my $.02.

Is it like undercoating? I'm interested in getting some fresh clear. How much do you think for a lightweight clearcoat treatment? Some wetsanding of existing paint then a couple coats of clear?
