19" wheel fitment (FD)
19" wheel fitment (FD)
i am getting ready to pick up a set fo 19" wheels for my 1993. i would like to know what is the widest wheels i can fit on front and rear and what would be the most aggressive offset so i can get the fattest lip possible. keep in mind my car is not lowered and my fenders are rolled
Why that size? Not much of a selection there... And why that wide? You plan on getting a body kit or are you turning your FD into a drifter dune buggy?

i think widest on stock fenders with the absolute correct offset is 275 or 285. You should go with 18's, if you do, you can save lots of money, and the beautiful part is that in the process of saving that money, you also prevent the car from looking like bigfoot.

i have 19s and love them, no complaints here: i have 285/30/19 out back and they fit fine, but my wheels are +46 although the rear has a 3 inch lip. you will need to get springs or coilovers to lower your car though as 19s create a little bit of fender gap.
IMO, 17's are still the best for tire selection, weight, performance and look for the RX7.
It's amazing what people can get used to..
I used to daily drive my RX7 for years when I first got it. It didn't bother me, I was just used to it. After driving my M3 around for a few years, I don't know how I did it. Sometimes you don't know any better until you have better.

Geez people, FD's aren't some honda/buick.. 19s are rediculous! At least spend that money on some reliability mod before trying to bling it out with some heavy *** 19s.. Any light weight 19s you would have to run such a tiny *** wall'd tires that one small pot hole could ruin your rims.
LOL i love how this thread is full of ignorance from people who have never had 19s on their fd, they rely soly from what they read on the boards. And yet, one of the most intelligent people on this forum, JimLab, had 19s on his fd. 19's dont look ridiculous what so ever and if your running a 3 piece wheel you wont have to worry about "ruining your rims" from a small sidewall. I have now close to 9,000 miles on my 19s with no problems at all and the ride is great on stock suspension.
Once again, you should read my comment:
Depending on the style of rims, they make the car look like a monster truck.
true, but i know from my OWN experience, either-way my comment was not pinned towards you. I have had 17's, 18's and 19's all with different size sidewalls. And i feel the ride is the same when i had 18s with 35 sidewalls compared to 19s with 30s that i have now. Wheels with bigger lips also appear to be smaller as well - many people think my wheels are 18's. Like i said its preference but if you have never been in a fd with 19s WITH a properly working suspension and can directly compare wheel sizes i dont think anyone has a right to mislead others based off of heresay from others with no or little experience.

As I mentioned above, you may just be used to the quality that you have now. Someone who is used to riding around in a Mercedes may think your car is harsh.
Rich, I like your 17's also. I was really surprised in the performance penalty going with a larger size wheel that is in general, heavier. I like my 18's and didn't want to believe that it would make much of a difference despite reading what all of people were saying on the forum (who didn't even have any 18's)...until I switched wheels during a fitment run...I also remember your post when you noticed a difference going way back to your 16's.....
Even on C6 Z06s and other high end sports cars where they're stock fitment? And that's "ridiculous", by the way...
Or making any assumptions about wheel weight? My 19s are probably as light or lighter than your 17s.
A P285/30-19 has a ~85.5mm (3.4") sidewall. A P275/40-17 has a ~110mm (4.3") sidewall. That 0.9" makes very little difference from a ride perspective, but it makes a big difference in aesthetics. If your local roads are full of potholes, drive a 4x4.
Personally, I'm not a big fan of the Fikse 13" center + 4" of rim look, or the overly thick look of most 40- and 45-series tires. They looked OK in the early 90s, but only in comparison to the 50- and 60-series tires of the 80s. Now they just look dated.
