17x11 on back of turbo2

First off let me say, I know it will not fit with the stock body. I am going to have the fenders brought out to fit the wheels. I am wanting to run a 17x11 with 315/35/17's in the rear. I want to know what offset will get the wheel as close as possible on the inside of the car without rubbing. The outer fender is not a problem since the fenders will be custom fitted around the wheel so as not to rub.

Can you tell us how much room is available now, with your current wheel? Need to also know the size/offset of the current wheel as well.

On one of my turbo2 I am running a 17x9 with a offset of 40. I am running a 255/40/17. It fits perfectly with no rubbing. Its close to rubbing the suspension arm down there but its not. Hopefully that will help

Need to know exactly how much clearance you have on the inside. Can't calculate anything with 'close to rubbing but not.'

Do you have any pics with the 17x9's on the rear of your car?

11's on stock fender won't work. Ain't gonna happen. The max you can do is a 9.5 without fender modification. And I believe a 265/35/18.

I will take a pic of my wheels on the GTUs. I have a set for track and a set for street. 18,9.5 255/35/18 and 17,9 with 245/40/17. You can compare. Will do at work.

Rishie, I know the 17x11 wont fit under the stock fender, I am going to have the fenders built to fit them. I was just wondering what offset might be needed to pull this off. I will take the car probably to a local hot rod shop since they do lots of metal work along with a rear quarter for each side from my parts car and let them do their thing.

Dclin, you can see pics of the back of the car here http://trinityrx7.50megs.com/photo.html But this car will not be getting the fatties out back, my 89 turbo 2 will. But this gives you the pic you need. I would say that the current setup is about 3-7mm from rubbing.

You'll want to add everything to the front spacing then.

Simple exercise - if you were to have a set of 17X11 +40s made, this would add 1" to both the front spacing and back spacing (outside face of the wheel and inside face of the wheel). This is because offset is the same as the 17X9 +40.

You don't have that kind of room in back, so you want to take the extra inch from the back spacing and add it to the front spacing. You do this by changing the offset. In this case its an even inch, or 25.4mms (round to 25mm for simplicity's sake) that we have to move.

If you reduce the positive offset of 40 to +15mm, you are effectively pushing the wheel out 1" (40mm-25mm=15mm) - removing that unwanted inch from the backspacing and moving it to the front.

This one inch we've added to the front spacing is in addition to the one inch we added already by going with a 17X11 wide wheel vs the 17X9. You now have 2 extra inches front spacing, and your new wheel (17X11 +15) will 'stick out' 2 inches further then the old (17X9 +40).

This is assuming all things equal though - there may be some differences in the rim lip (some wider then others - appears that CCW wheels run wide) that may effect fit, if you are trying to use up every mm of clearance it's something to think about. I'd reduce an extra 5mm of offset (17X11 +10) to kick it out a little more to give a bit more clearance on the inside, just to be safe.

BTW, what shop is this that is doing the sheetmetal work? Funny, as that I found a shop just south of Dallas that will likely be doing mine:

I've yet to find the time to go up there visit and examine thier work - and STILL waiting on my front fenders. Intersting if it's the same shop. PM me.

Dclin has it right on the money. I'd suggest a +10 as well as your highest offset. Meaning, don't go any higher than the +10.

God, it's so nice to have qualified guys here helping. The math really is simple.

Later, Rishie

This means you are going to need to add at least 2.5" to your fender.

Hey Rishie, don't you have a widebody FC? Trinity should be talking to you.

Not qualified, I just have no life.

I am still in the process of selling my 87 turbo 2 and once its gone, I will start on the 89 turbo 2. Once I have sold the 87 and I have money ready I will start calling around to see who can actually do it. But one of my high school teachers housband owns the Sasche Rod Shop and I have seen some of the cars they make and a bunch of the custom stuff they do. So I figure something like this would be simple for them. Thanks for all the help, looks like I will be looking for a 17x11 with a offset of 10.
