15" Tires

Besides the Falkens and the Bridgestones, who else makes ultra sticky tires with a treadwear of 140 or above in the following sizes?

225/45/15 would be the optimal
then 225/50/15, 205/50/15, 195/50/15.

Pretty soon there'll be the Toyo R1R in a 225/45/15. Apparently it's designed to beat things like the Azenis and the Bridestones. Hankook RS2 in that same size too, but not as sticky as the Azenis and such. BFG KD in a 225/50/15 I think. Often 225/50/15's are a little wider than the 225/45/15's.

What wheels are you planning on using? If you don't have any yet might I suggest Rota Slipstreams. They come in 15x7.5 for STS2 legal competition, or 15x8 if that's not an issue. Very inexpensive, fairly light, but it will require some spacers. I've got the 15x8's as my track wheels with 225/50/15 Hankook Z211 R comp tires. Clears the brakes by miles with a 7/16" (~11mm) spacer.

I was thinking about those, since you recommended them to me earlier.

right now, I'm using a set of 15 x 7, +24 Mustang rims ($50 for all 4 with tires!), but the extra .5" of width would help squeeze out every last drop of grip. I'm trying to extend the track as much as possible to be flush with the fender, from what I observe 7", +25 is ideal, so 7.5", +30 would be good.

Looks like I need a 10 mm spacer......do your tires stick out of the fenderwell?

If only Tire Rack would do a test between the 195/55/15 Dunlop, the 195/50/15 Bridgestone, the 205/50/15 Falken and the 225/45/15 Toyo, I'd be very interested to see those results around an autocross course.

I wouldn't hold my breath on that one, since they don't sell Toyos or Kumhos.

With mine it's not sticking out at all, no rubbage on either side. It could maybe go out a little farther, but I'm more concerned about not rubbing than about absolute flushness.

There's also the new Kumho XS, but that'll probably be a longer wait, since last I heard they were still in the testing phase.

If we go down that route, I might as well wait for the RE-11, the RE-01R killer killer.

Probably is that they're only doing a 205/50/15, from what I read. Damn you Bridgestone, make a 225/40 or 225/45 already!

Any other good 15" custom wheels besides Kodiak that you can think of? Lightweight is the priority at the expense of durability.

Spin Werkes does a 15x8, 13.3lbs, not sure if you can get the right offsets though. The choice in 15" wheels for our bolt pattern is **** poor. Keizer wheels are cheaper than Kodiaks, but they're not all that great. Our Formula SAE team used them and complained that they were crap.

Those are too low, and I know he's well aware of them. I believe he's looking for STS2 class legal Autocross tires, in which case you cannot run anything with less than 140 (no race tires) by the rules, nothing wider than 225 on a maximum wheel width of 7.5".

I officially retract my Toyo R1R suggestion.

I always thought Toyos were good just based on price. Apparently not in this case.

piece of *****.........looks like I'm waiting for the Ecsta XS or the RE-11 to come out....I might just have to get a 195 RE-01R if I decide to throw down this year.

I guess if I had the money I could buy new R1R's and shave them after every event.

I'm pretty sure the word is that the XS will be 17"+ only, and it'll be about a year for RE-11's, and they may only be available in a 195 still. Maybe get some 225/45/15 Hankooks and use them as your DD/autocross tires for the next year.

RE-11's will most likely come out in a 205/50/15 size

BFGoodrich sells the gForce T/A KD in 225/50/15. They are expensive. They had very little side wall roll over. Unfortunately, I was forced to use my stock suspension for a weekend practice, and after 40 runs the front left tire was corded near the sidewall. There is plenty of tread left on the tires, but the stock suspension gained so much camber that the side tread was very abused. I wouldn't recommend these simply because of the price. A set of Falkens would be a much better choice if you are intent on using a 15" wheel.

The BFG's are quite old, and have been out of contention in STS2 for awhile now, I think it's really down to the Bridgestones, or Falkens.

If you're not afraid of spacers then there's always the Rota Slipstreams from 18racing. They're about 14lbs, but are a 40mm offset, so you'll need a spacer (I use 7/16" for a total offset of ~29mm, fits nicely with 225/50/15's). Cheap too, at $550 delivered (last I checked anyway).

There's the Spin Werkes wheels from Racer Parts Wholesale. 13.3lbs, looks like a steel circle track wheel, but is aluminum. I have no idea about what the available offsets are. More expensive though at $238/ea.

There's also some not too heavy steel wheels, like the Bassett D-hole that's 17lbs, but they list the highest backspace as 5", which is about a 13mm offset, and you'll probably have fender issues. Cheap at about $80/ea though.

Other than that I'm not aware of any, at least nothing that's less than maybe $2k (ie custom wheels from somewhere like Kodiak).

The Slipstreams don't come in 4 x 114.3

I'll look into the Spin Werkes wheels, I may only need two of them anyway.
