safc-II or not?

hey, i have a 1986 gxl N/A automatic<----(i know it sucks but the tranny only has like 500 miles since the rebuild). i was wondering with my few mods: full exhaust (2.25 " tubing all the way untill they collect to a three inch magnaflow performance exhaust) 5th&6th ports fully open, and a heavy foot , should i get an safc-II? im not going to FULLY modify the rx-7, probably just like 190-200 hp, but i heard the safc-II will gain about 10 hp with proper tunning, and save you a little bit of gas. is this true, or what can i do to lean out my fuel mixture around the low RPMs (this is my regular daily driver, and rarely sees above 4000RPM, but every now and then i like to get a little crazy too).
so should i get the safc-II?, i can get it brand new around $200, and i dont intend on going standalone.

It is true. But your not going to be getting 190-200hp I don't think.
Its still a NOTICABLE upgrade, and regardless to what the numbers say, its defenitly worth the money. Think of it as an investment, it will go from your car, to your next car, etc, its not just for the seven, but for any NA car.

cool, thanks for the responses, probably have it by the 30th of july. i wanna go to the battle of the imports, and get it dynoed.

ps. i wasnt saying that with the safc-II i would get 200hp, abviously with MANY other mods. i have a friend whose a genius with rotaries...his credentials... :8.82 @159 mph (best run) on stock rx3 chassis and stock rear suspension (1/4 mile).

At today's prices, the fuel savings will about pay for it..

BTW working aux ports are way better than wired open aux ports, unless you drive all day over 4K RPM.

When the secondaries come on, then the 5/6 will go on automatically, which can make it bog if you're not careful. Pineapple racing sleeves and doing it the right way will make it run better

BTW if you wanna see 200 bhp, go for some 550 or 720cc injectors and a tii fuel pump or a walbro 255 or aeromotive a1000 and a good CAI or just a cone filter.
Oh yeah, and a RB header would be nice
And maybe a clutch

Hm? He has an 86. Unless he's done a lot of fancy magic, the 5th/6th ports are backpressure driven off the exhaust. The ECU has nothing to do with opening them.

As for a SAFC-II paying for itsself in fuel economy, that was my plan. I've seen a bit of an improvement, but nothing spectacular. 3-4mpg improvement TOPS.

It's also a bad idea to get a SAFC unless you're prepared for full standalone crack. I was talking with a friend about getting a SAFC, and his advice was "They're like a gateway drug. You'll want a standalone in under 6 months." A month later, I was looking up prices on standalones. Haven't obtained one yet, but... it really highlights the limits of the stock ECU.

[hijack] I'm still budget diddling with the stock ECU & TMIC. - Maybe water injection next? I'm a true cheap skate..[/hijack]

thanks for the responses.
i already have a FULL custom exhaust, hence why i wired open the 5th/6th ports, no backpressure pipe. and i doubt i will wanna go standalone later.
and yes i will try and get some 720cc injectors. (for sure the secondaries, and if i find them for a good price, ill get them for the primaries aswell) and a walbro 255.
after reading this, i will most likely get the sleeve inserts, and stick the sleeves back in, fully open ofcourse.

The stock fuel system is pretty good.

I'd start with an air/fuel ratio gauge.
You're going to need it to set the S-AFC.
You will probably see that you already have plenty of fuel.

You have already done the biggest HP for $ mod - the header.
The other good mod for an NA is a cold air / ram air intake.

Then look at an RPM switch and an air pump to work the Aux ports.
Check me on this by doing your own test.
Time a low end pull from 2K to 4K in 4th gear with the ports open.
Then time the same pull with the ports closed.
That low end torque loss really effects all your daily driving & fuel mileage.
