Thedrivesedge hosting 3.1 mile Motorsport ranch
Just wanted to let you guys know that thedrivesedge will host the new 3.1 mile track at motorsport ranch on April 1-2. It should be pretty fun based on the layout I saw on their drawing.
I will be there as an instructor for sure this time. I should be driving my new track car (assuming I can get wheels and tires on time).
Hope to see some of you guys there....

this is a 2 days event and you'll get approximately 4hrs of track time. Most of the cars I see there are vettes, viper, porsches, NSX, ferrari, T/A, miatas and ocassionally rx7s.
They're about 72% full so don't wait until the last min if you want to be in.

I doubt it since majority of the students require an instructor. Unless you can convience the chief instructor that you're more than capable of handling the track w/o an instuctor and also not to cause any accident.....

Damm Steve, I'm going to stop by the shop in the morning to see Alex, I gotta see your new beast close up. You could run it in SP or ITE.
The Drivers Edge is first class. I believe you get 4-20 min sessions a day. They will only let you go solo if you hold a racing license or equivalent experience with them or PCA etc.......

F@ck and Double F@ck! I need to hurry up and get ONE of my cars track ready. I'm hoping the pay increase with the new gig will help close the gap and get my FD back on the road at least. My GSL-SE I just need to spend some quality time with. I almost wish I were single again so I could get SOMETHING done! Oh well, my son will probably start autocrossing in two years anyhow.

Don't think I can do ITE since the car is way too modify for any SCCA road racing. As for SP, they probably won't let me neither since it isn't a street car anymore with roll cage, gutted interior, big brake kits, single turbo, brake bias valve, 26gal fuel cell, etc....

You're going to be an instructor for a track you've never driven?
I know you're a good driver Steve, but do you really think that's wise? According to every single person I've talked to, the new section of MSR is exceptioanlly challenging and exceptionally unforgiving.

I'm already an instructor with them for the past few years. I don't think you can derate an instructor status simply because I haven't driven the track yet. I was instructing VIR back in 2000 on my first time there when they first opened up. It took me literally two laps to learn the track and I was only about .5 secs faster by the end of the weekend. I ran faster times than the local instructors w/ C5 vettes and Good year race slicks that has 2-3 track events there. I was on Hoosiers nevertheless. It's not about how difficult the track is when it comes to racing, its about racing instinct and know when to go fast and slow down. I guess if for someone who only looks for the cones to determine their turn-in, apex, and track-out, it would be more diffcult for them to learn.
Do you ever see autox guys running slow out of only 4 track time? It's the same reason why some people only takes one try to go fast while others keep hitting cones over and over again.......

I have been there and seen the new track layout, quite complex, lots of elevation change, some blind corners, people are going to spin, I would put a lot of money on it. The new section of the track is without question very demanding. Sound like a fun event
Just watched that video, I can't believe they would let them drive that new portion of the track with "that" much dust on it. That is by no means a little bit or I am seeing things.

I guess that's my concern.
If you're not familiar with the track, the car, OR the driver, how do you know what is "stupid"? I know the goal is not to make people F1 drivers, but the goal of an instructor is, as you said, show them the line and help them become better drivers while eliminating mistakes. I'm sure this is possible with an instructor who has never seen the track before, but I certainly would feel more comfortable if my instructor had more experience on this specific track than I did!

Damon is right on the money on this. Besides, they allow instructors to drive on Friday night to test the track out (for those who has time). Also, instructor group goes first in the morning to practice at the track so in 8-9 laps, almost every instructors are familiar with the course before sitting with a student.
speaking of instructors, Damon, are you interested to be one? They're looking for a few more instructors and I"m sure I can put a good word for you since I have seen you drive before and know that you're a capable driver, if you do I need to know FAST so I can tell him about you......

This weekend was fun!!! Those who didn't make it definately missed one of the best track layout of a life time. There're alot of elevation changes, hard braking blind turns, off camber, fast sweeper etc.... I managed to flat spotted my hoosiers while slowing down from the front straight to the rattle snake so my weekend was cut short on sunday. Overall, this track is comparable to road atlanta and hallett in difficulties w/o any major high speed striaght away.
I still need to prep my track car more since my brakes, suspension and camber isn't optimium. I'm still learning to drive this car w/o power assisted brakes, Power steering and ABS.
Overall, I'll give this new layout an A+

sweet!! Just becareful on the new sections of the track. It can be dangerous if you get off track (lake, rocks, ditch, etc....) I saw so many vettes, S2000 and porsche catch on fire because they crack the oil pan while going off the track in the new sections. The Z06 there melted some interior pieces from the fire when the oil pan got crushed. There were a few times that I almost lost it because I wasn't used to the braking system of my car. Good thing I was able to remodulate the brake to get it unlock itself. take it easy on the first few sections and you'll be fine. :-)
