Eventually that ban was lifted after an apology and he became Americas favorite drug riddled dad.

The bureaucrats in Mexico saw the life the settlers in Tejas were making for themselves (off the sweat of their own brows) and decided to increase the settlers taxes greatly to cash in on their progress. This was after the settlers were invited in under inticeing terms. The settlers not being Mexican citizens wanted the right to vote and represent themselves in Mexican government in responce to the higher taxes. Neither side would budge and after a few years of one sided negociations the Texans cast off the Government of Mexico and formed their own, just like the 13 colonies revolted against Great Britan 60 years prior. The Mexican Army was sent in to enforce their rule over the rebels and retain their borders, therefore, keep their cash cow that they gave no rights. Many like Jim Bowe, and David Crockett were American citizens who having grown up in the infancy of the greatest nation ever established for individual freedom considered thems selves patriots for freedom where ever it was fought for. They and many like them traveled to Texas in haste to join the fight for freedom, with only glory to gain and their lives to loose. They knew the odds were slim and yet they all still came, for freedom. The first major confrontation occurred at Goliad where a small group of the rebels, at that point still mainly a political cause group, surrendered to the overwhelming Mexican Army. They were immediatly marched out of town and slaughtered, only a few managed to escape. At that point almost all the settlers in Tejas decided to fight until death, including many Mexicans who were living in Tejas. Many raced to fortify the Alamo in order to try and stop Santa Anna's Army there. The Alamo defenders had a battle cry, it was "Remeber Goliad!" They expected to be joined with the rest of Sam Houston's larger and slower Texan Army but Houston realized it would be a battle he couldn't win and the reinforcements never came. So many good men consciously decided to stand their ground and gave thier lives on the alter of freedom, none ran. Not many (if any) gave his life in order to own slaves, there were many freed men in the Texas Army.

After the battle of the Alamo, Santa Anna went after the bulk of Houston's army. Houston severly outnumbered used his weakness as an advantage by running from the large and slow moving Mexican Army until it was spread thin and the group with Santa Anna was small and close by. When the Mexicans stopped to rest and let thier gaurd down, they held Houston in contempt by then, Houston turned and finally gave his men the orders they had been begging to hear, FIGHT!, now is the time to avenge our brothers, defend our familes and homes, and gain our freedom. The battle was short and victorious with Santa Anna running then being captured dressed as a regular. He surrendered all of Texas in exchange for his one life. He wasn't very passionate about Mexico it seems.

Texans are very proud of thier heritage and it's monuments. We preserve them in order to remember what it took to give us the lifes we enjoy, the lives of many. If this bores you then perhaps you should wander over to Sea World San Antonio, or some other trap for brainless tourists who need to be professionally entertained in order to enjoy a trip to another place with a proud heritage on display. My father took me, and I have taken my children from one end of this great state to the other, and along the way we stop at places of historical signifigance. So far none of us have ever been bored, even at the massacre site in Goliad which is pretty sparce. The reason may be that we actually know why we're there in the first place.

California, seems like it was just a remote outpost without much reason to go there until gold was discovered in a river bed, free for the taking. Then it was settled by hundreds of thousands looking for unearned wealth and freedom. Much like many California's inhabitants today. Now that's a heritage to be proud of and continue. Let's go to Disenyland, I'm bored. NOT. That being said California looks beautiful and I'd like to visit someday, hopefully I wouldn't feel so bored by the lack of meaningful history that I'd actualy visit one of it's many tourist traps and spend a ton of hard earned money. Why is it Californians make movies about Texas, Texans, and Californians, but never about California?

P.S. I am a natural born Texan and amateur Texas historian. I love my state's history as much as my country's. If you want to pull out a history book and look for ways to blow holes in my post that's your business. You will only find technicalitys and I won't waste my time responding to them. I've only stated some facts in my own words and a letter in exact words, and yea many of them are probably misspelled.

Yeah, after all they were US citizens where it was legal and practiced, but they only showed up for the fight. Being that Tejas was northern Mexico, slavery WAS illegal there. That's why there were Freed Men fighting for Texas independence, they came here to live also. The Texans chose to live here knowing this, and slavery wasn't in any way a cause of the revolt. Slavery was something that came to Texas afterwards. Honestly I'm not sure if it was legalized in the three year period that Texas was an independant nation or when it became a state of the US. In any case my point is that these monuments in question are in no way symbols of slavery as stated.

Notice in that apology letter from Roel he basically just side steps the issue from his own personal viewpoint and apologizes because his personal opinion is affiliated with the magazine. He doesn't give a crap and fully meant everything he said and it's obvious. I'm still not buying that magazine. They'd have to fire him and then actually make it worth reading before I'll do that. Don't see either of those happening any time soon.

FYI CA has the fifth LARGEST economy in the WORLD. I have nothing aginst Texas, and I think LA mostly sucks, but CA in general is pretty cool once you get out of the citys. I am a CA transpant from Seattle, I live in LA due to the fact I get paid better here than anywhere else I want to live. But the crazy rent makes up for the extra $. BTW good luck as that bitch Rita comes thru.

 

I feel sorry for the Louisiana folks again, but it doesn't look like it's going to do much up here in the Metroplex that doesn't already happen each Fall and Spring...read, heavy rain....
