Help with tuning in New Orleans/Northshore area...

I remember speaking to Ted and he mentioned Barry Bordes(think that was the name) was a mad scientist with the PFC. I could really use some help.

I don't have just a stock map as mine was mapped by rotor sports racing in NC, but when they mapped it my mods were just going to be a DP and Greddy SMIC.

I have since added a Hi-Flo Cat and a Greddy Profec B and running 12psi.,

Would really appreciate some help just to get me up to par.

As it is I think I'm running a little rich, but that's just a guess.

If anyone knows how to contact him, I'd be grateful.

Thanks for the help,

Kenny

Kenny,

Give Ted a call and I am sure he has Barry's number. If you need Ted's number, PM me.

I don't know if you remember me, but I sold you the cold air intake at Darrel's garage.

In conjunction with a party, I detect a need to hold classroom instruction to teach P-FC Datalogit, WBO2 street tuning, ECU and engine setup under the auspices of Sevens of the Shore.

In order to expedite tuning, how's your car running in terms of the load, spark, and fuel parameters? Will it hold a 10-8-10 boost pattern? Are all vacuum lines intact w/o leaks, ie. pulling a normal vacuum at idle and cruise? What kind of knock readings show on the Commander? Are the wires and plugs reasonably fresh? Is the fuel filter fresh? Do you have a Datalogit and/or a WBO2?

As long as there are no issues, your car should be easy to tune.

I have no clue as to spark, load and fuel... I would like to learn, but so far my experience with my fd has been helping Darrell fix and mod my car...

I never have held a perfect 10-8-10 it's more like a 10-6-10, but car pulls strong.

As far as I know, I have no leaks, I have had 2 in past but both are fixed.

As far as knock, as soon as I installed my DP and hi-flo cat my knock was off the charts, per Darrell I disabled it in PFC.

Yes, if anything strong vacuum, idle is usually 17-18 in/hg per my defi guage and at cruise it pulls more than that off throttle, throttle on is usually more near zero.

The wires, plugs, fuel filter and engine are all about 8500 miles on them (about a year old)

I have a PFC with commander, no datalogit and no WBO2.

Here's a summary of my car...

Upgrades:

Suspension and handling: KYB GR-2 shocks, 5Zigen GN+'s 18x8.5's (235/40/18) in front and 18x9.5's (265/35/18) in rear(12/28). Upgraded to Brembo Zinc coated Slotted and Drilled rotors (8/7)

Barry and I recently discussed doing a tuning class. It could utilize some chalkboard time for Datalogit, Excel log processing, Innovate LM-1 WBO2 tuning and provide hands-on experience.

Barry is one very experienced carguy with professional expertise in aviation materials, airframe and turbine maintenance. He supervises an offshore helicopter maintenance facility of 40 birds. His FD is phenomenally fast and he constructed his ported engine. Although our combined ages exceed a century, "Mr." adds about another 100 yrs. to that, so no - ya can't call me Mr.

Importance of Knock Values

I'll begin by saying wideband AFRs, EGT, and knock values yield extremely important data that enables a proper tune for power, economy, and endurance.

There is only so much timing range with which to work on stock to streetport engine, but it is imperative to know knock values while tuning. DLSN (driveline slop noise) can render a new knock sensor useless, but reveals the need for driveline attention. I don't really see how the new DP and cat can affect knock readings except that the exhaust pipes are not installed correctly and are touching/banging against the unibody to cause slop noise => erratic values from the knock sensor.

Solution: Stress-relieve exhaust system with heat and a prybar, correct rubber hangers for isolation, reactivate knock sensor and check knock values. Knock sensors live in a very harsh environment and can fail easily.

Recently during WBO2 logging, we have seen two non-factory engines fail in short order - in both instances knock values were wild and dismissed as "bad sensors". In first case, a corner seal fell out of a fresh build and in the second case an apex seal "burned" & failed due to a chronic misfire - likely a cold and broken L plug on F rotor. Neither engine was abused and neither had bad data in PFC.

Get that knock sensor issue resolved!

I want to point out that we want to expand the knowledge base of Sevens on the Shore. LM-1s are cheap as dirt and work well! Datalogit is again available and is cheap! Barry's .xls program that I've posted on another thread is phenomenal! The Wargasm and Chuck & Kyle papers are incredibly important works.

Let's get to work and get Sevens on the Shore member cars viable again.

Not neceissarily the DP and Cat that provoked the knock sensor, it just so happened that they were installed the same day as the PFC, so before then I had never seen the knock sensor values...

At idle it was kinda high but it fluctuated, at throttle it pegged out and never moved.

It is possible I need a new one.

When I spoke to Brian at Rotor sports racing, he thought that it was unlikely that it was a valid reading.

Katrina came soon after and I have had no chance to investigate further, thus taking the time to get my fd in better physical shape (looks etc).

So, should I buy a new knock sensor and start there?

P.S. I was told by someone that once a bunch of bolt on's find their way to the engine bay the engine would make more noise anyway (as far as knock is concerned).

Thanks for all yoru help Mark. Point me in the right direction.

Mark You Talked About Timing Range On A Stock To Street Ported Moter And How

Theres Only So Much You Can Do...well This Is Very True. In Fact Most Of The Big

Name Tuners (wont Name Names) Out There Use The Same (safe) Timing Maps On All

The Cars They Tune No Matter What The Port....also Dlsn And Other Interference

Noises/viberations Are The Reason Why Most People Disconnect The Knock

Sensore Function On Ems's. Haha Also Probably Why Most People Are Blow'n

There **** Up!

P.s. I Find That Most People Are In The Dark And Are "scered" Of Tuning...not To

Say Its Just A Walk In The Park To Tune An Efi System (or An Efi Rotary For That

Matter) But I Think Its Just A Lack Of Knolage Of The Tuning Basics That Have

People In The Dark. Its Like When Your On A Diving Board And You Think The

Water Is Really Deep, But You Really Wont Know Untill You Jump In. And Then

When You Finally Get The ***** To Jump, You Come To Find Out It Really Wasnt

That Deep After All! Tuning Is The Same Way Imho...

Which Is Why I Really Think A Class Is A Good Idea Mark!

Oh Man No "mr."! Thats Cool Ill Just Stick To Calling You Markie Mark Then! Haha!

I can reserve a Private room at Larry Flint's on Bourbon for the chalkboard session. Let me know when class will begin Professoreeeee !!

My Car will be back in order soon. Hopefully I can avoid the temptation of the '03 50th Anniversary Edition Z06 in the Millenium Yellow skins that I'll be driving this weekend. Charles purchased a MINT........LIKE NEW.... Z06 this past week in West Palm.

Now that I got the "Rock" out of the way........its time to play.

Not quite yet. I still bleed and sweat Rotors (2mm seals) Have been die hard rotary for the past 6 years that I've owned my FD. My car is being freshened up as we speak and will be ready for some Kan Dyno / Street tuning very soon.

However, I am being tempted to cross over to the dark side and purchase one cleaaaaaaaan *** 405 hp Z06 beast that my dealer friend picked up this week.

Engine being redone in Orlando, FL by the man David Biggers. New Housings, New Rotors, New Atkins 2mm seals, springs....the works....and perhaps slighltly more aggressive street porting.

Front rotor leaned out and popped an Apex seal due to faulty Injector / Plug / Stong gust of wind ..........not quite sure yet. Engine had been running flawless and strong as hell for the past 2 years until running into a few minor but critical issues that doomed this engine.

Sorry to hear that Ted, Mark told me this morning...

I am gonna get me a new knock sensor and start there...

Kinda wishing I didn't just spend about $1000 on new shocks, springs and a light kit.

I am usually all about need/reliability first but I splurged.

Ted,

Very glad to hear that you are sticking with the rotary community. You know you would have missed the car so much! However, it might be nice not smelling like gas all the time! Ha! Ha!

Very sorry to hear about the engine though...

Did I see you said "got the rock out of the way"? Can I interpret that to mean that you and Dyan are "finally" engaged?

Hope all is well in New Orleans.

Charlie my man...........good interpretation Actually, I have the "Rock" just have to give it to her.....most likely on V-Day. Anyway, I am die hard rotary, BUT I think there's a good chance I'm gonna break down and get the Z06. Stay in touch man. The 7's crew miss you and the Mrs. down here.
