I'll have to check this out and I'm going to drag some exhaust stuff out there hoping the mandrel bender is online. Will this be "kid friendly" or should I leave the 11-yr old boy at home?

Since I will have cars on the dyno all day. It will be loud for sure. I don't expect anyone bringing any alcohol so it should be kid friendly. I can't guarantee if any girls would wear bikinis though??
Also anyone who are coming, please vote on my FB event page so that I can get a head count. So far, I have over 50 confirmed and I may have over 100 people on this when time gets near so I wanted to make sure I get enough food for everyone.

Bikini's would be great...he's def at that age where he's finally noticing. It'll be good to get him off the darn Nintendo DSI and see some finished cars, too. If y'all get the mandrel bender going, this could be one helluva productive road trip.

Less than 2 weeks away... if you plan to show up, please sign up on my FB so I can get a accurate headcount for food and drinks... so far over 80 people said they will attend. It should be a large turnout.

My bender should be here on 8/14/11. I'm still trying to push them to make it here for the open house party. Mine can only do up to 3.5". there are single axis bender that will do up to 6" but they're just bender and nothing more. I wouldn't use them to fabricate exhaust systems but are good to make bends so you can weld them together. The one I have is a 2 axis TNC programmable bender and can repeat for high quantity production runs. If I were to get a bender that can do everything I want and still has the capability to do up to 6", they are around $600,000. There are less than 5 companies in the US that has the capability and are CNC for automotive use. One company I know that has one is CP-E. They have a $680,000 bender that can do just about anything you want. but again, the exhaust system they sell are around $6-10K for the porsche guys.
Here's a video of what a $600,000 CNC mandrel bender looks like. This particular machine can do up to 5" in O.D. If I can afford one of these, I wouldn't spent my time on the automotive industry and would jump right into the aerospace production.....

Here's a 6" CNC bender you were asking about... The machine is about as tall as me. I won't even have room to fit this machine in my shop. This one is slightly cheaper because it is hydraulic instead of electric. I think the price for this machine is around $400,000.... I think its funny when every forum I read said that there are hundreds of mandrel benders in DFW. I did alot of research on this and couldn't locate one in DFW. The fact is that I will be the only one in DFW that has one for exhaust, intake tubing. I also heard that there is another mandrel bender in Dallas but he only does chassis work and doesn't like to change his tooling often so he won't make anything for anyone unless for a good price or high quantities.

not really, the price is heavily influenced by the price of the material. For example, 3" stainless steel 16Ga is approximately $15-$20/ft. A typical bend tube is approximately 16"-22" so you're looking at $30 on material plus bend for 3"
Aluminum tubing price is climbing also so its a matter of time before Aluminum gets close to stainless steel price.
Another factor to consider is that there are many different stainless steel materials. T304SS is the most common and is the cheapest. T304/L cost more because of low carbon and is easier and cleaner to weld. This is the same material use for aerospace and what I sell at the shop.
You can also get galvanized steel or Aluminized steel. They are about half the price than stainless steel

Unfortunately no... they ran into problems after heat treated the tooling and had to rework them. Last I heard was that I should get it by Aug 22nd. However, USPS just screwed me on the 2nd payment to the bender company. I mailed a certified check with USPS on 8/1 and they lost it. The problem is, I don't know how to go about doing this since the certified check is in the amount of $50K. Bank said it would take 45 days to cancel the check and clear for another one. In the meantime, I don't have another $50K to mail to the bender company. I'm working on another alternative as we speak and see if something can come up. This whole thing has turned into a nightmare.....
On the bright side, I now have over 140 people attending according to my FB invitiation... should be a big event.... Hopefully I have enough parking spot for everyone.
