Emissions laws in texas

In the parts of Texas that do emissions testing what is the age there is no testing of the emissions? I read that if your car is between 2-24 years old you have to have the test. So if your RX7 is older then 1981 you don't get the emissions part of the state inpspection?

Just asking b/c I'm about to purchase a 79 rx7...

Cool thanks for the info, do you guys look for all the emissions stuff, my smog pump is already gone and it looks like my thermal reactor is gone to(just a piece of exhaust pipe in its place).

I am about to remove the rats nest so I can get a better idle and may hold off on it if they do a visual inspection of that stuff.

In Tarrant County, it's just a safety inspection once the car gets past 25 years old...does it stop straight? Does the horn work? Do the lights work? Do the signals work? Do the hazards work?

Then it passes.....they don't even raise the hood on the '68 Firebird......also, think of this. Just how many inspection guys know for sure what a rotary engine bay looks like? My '80 with header passed emissions because of some excellent engineering from Ari to run it with cats and the air pump. When it was time for inspection, it passed the sniffer and the techs who did the inspections never questioned the obvious header or bogus heat riser tube to the air cleaner that clearly was non-functional.

If you don't get on the sniffer, then they have no way of knowing what is supposed to be under there or not, so don't worry about it....

I thought headers were legal so long they didn't remove, or change the position of, the stock cats. Then again, most headers i know for a rotary do remove the pre-cat at least.

Some counties can not afford the new Texas Emmisions testing equiptment. This is why I continute to register my car in Emory TX. We own a lake house out there. The county there dosn't use the emmision testing and is just visual and saftey inspection only.

$12.50 and you're good to go.

It's not a matter of being able to afford... It's a matter of only teh counties with the worst polution levels have emssion inspections (big city areas only)

Although, do note that the sticker you get for emissions and non-emissions inspections are different. (white state on colored background or inverse)

If the car is registered in an emission county with a non-emission sticker, you're going to get a big ticket when you get pulled over.

But yes.. anything >24yrs old doesn't have to pass emissions, just safety. 3 more years for me!

My car is registered in Emory, so my inspection is done in emory. Driving it in dallas isn't going to get me a ticket.
