The bigger sanctioning bodies (NHRA, NOPI, IDRC) stopped bringing events to Texas as of 2005 and unfortunately, have no plans to come back to Texas at this time because of lack of fanbase (go figure). The closest event is NHRA in Denver, CO. Some smaller events are being held around the Texas, Oklahoma and Louisiana area......

of course now-a-days just about every drag stip has an import class, run on a regular basis. the pay outs are not so bad, and the costs are less

Lack of a fan base? Probably has alot to do with there marketing toward the urban and car show people. I raced at one of the events in august a year or two ago. At this event I was asked not to ride my bicycle through the area roped off for the "show" cars. So I asked the promoter for the event who was telling me not to do this why are the other people that are doing the same thing as we speak on golf carts minibikes not being asked to stop riding here. He replied and said that those people were part of the car show and thats why they could ride here. So I said to the promoter that I was one of the racers here and he said that it didnt matter I still couldnt ride here. At this point I asking where would your car show be without the racers here? No fan base???? No wonder. Thanks NHRA for being dumped on!! I have attended every last import event in Texas and raced in half of them. Not everybody that owns an import is in to body kits, urban music, and stereo competions. I thought at one point there were supposed to be races involved here!

It's a sad truth. Every time i tell someone that i have a drag car their ears purk up and thay say what kind. As soon as i say Mazda you can see the look on their faces as they loose intrest. When people think import bad things come to mind, no wonder noone wants to go to the import drags.

That's a good idea. If your serious we might be able to make this work.

We would need buy-in from a couple of major dragstrips and a couple of title sponsors.

We can develop a short series run of like 4-6 races with a finals in the late fall (Since it's possible to race in Texas well into November.)

Maybe consider the development a no-compete or pro class so shops don't show up and dominate the series. The events were killer until they started getting dominated by 2 or 3 RX-7s and a couple of Supras. After a while it became the same old same old.

Ideas?

I dont think that a "import only" series will work anymore but if we could get a sanction body like Clash Of The Titans to create an import class that would be really fun.

I'd be interested in organizing something. would hate to close the door to "shop cars," just run several different classes. you would need a FWD, RWD, all motor, and maybe a "BPU street tire" class.
might be abble to run in cunjunction with another series, or test and tune, instead of renting the track
if you have to rent the track out, run braket racing or time trials between rounds. these people help pay for the track

I agree renting the track out is not a good idea.

In fact it might be the worst possible scenario...

I talked with Steve yesterday and we discussed some various options and failures of the past and what could work if some effort got behind a series like this. I know a local promoter here in town, I am going to approach him and see what he thinks as far as the local crowd and what type of event the scene can support now.

you could probably get them to do an import shoot out thing on friday nights every once in a while without going into too much expense or taking up the whole night. kind of a mini bracket race during the middle of a regular night. add $5 for those that want to enter, a small prize for quick et and low reaction time, and just see how it catches on. call texas motorplex and talk to trey about it, he's pretty cool to deal with.

the sad thing about import racing is that 90% of the cars you see are the typical riced out fast n furious wannabees with 4k in mods to a $500 car that doesn't even make it faster.

i'll spread the word in the bike world if something gets going.

they already have those import classes on friday nights, this would be a little bigger because you have several classes.

Instead of creating a new event, the RX7 community needs to support the few import races that are already around. San Antonio Raceway just had an import vs domestic drag event with thousands in cash payouts. The Import Quick 16 was full, but not a single RX7 was in it. :-/ Results are on www.StreetTrends.net The Import class paid down to semis and the first place winner (a honda) won $1000.

Yes, go to www.ImportFaceOff.com - they have results for every location from previous years.

IFO has a bike class and they used to have an air cooled class, but that was dropped years ago. There were never enough air cooled cars show up to justify making a class for them.
