wrapping manifold

Does anyone have any first hand experience on wrapping turbo manifolds. A lot of people have been telling me it will crack the manifold. I read that the amount of heat retained in the manifold would severely break down the metal and the manfold would not last very long. The thing is, I'm not sure if these are just people's theories or are they speaking from experience. Does anyone have any knowledge on this topic? My manifold is stainless steel and I am wondering what the life expectancy would be if I did wrap it.

FYO – In the early 80s I had a 1966 390 + hp. Mustang I use to race for money on Angeles Crest Hwy 3, Palmdale Rd. ” Modified 308.” It had hooker headers that were mild steel exterior Aluminum coated. I wrapped the exterior with Fiberglass impregnated with Asbestos, which is a fantastic material. The headers life was cut extremely short. I then tried JetHot 1300 exterior in the late 80s . Exterior looked great. Interior was eaten up quickly. This was in a modded Gt. Mustang With a Boss 302 block o-ringed for N20, Carrillo rods, Bla, bla, bla, ECT. Tried JetHot on several other vehicles same results. All exterior coating no interior.

I don’t have any experience with stainless steel. BUT

I Recently coated my stainless headers an down pipe for my RX6 turbo with JetHot 2000 Interior / exterior and I am sad that I did. The interior on both had huge voids with no coating, Long story. Pain in the ***. Exterior looks great though. I also heat wrapped the exhaust manifold. I have not as of yet run it but it is very close. Ran out of money, stated a new business.

To make a long story short because I have had way too much to drink and I am on my friend’s computer. Yes it will cut the life of your exhaust system. With stainless steel, I don’t know by how much. As for cracking I don’t see why it would crack if the manifold was designed properly and the weld are sound. Heat wrapping it will keep in almost all of the heat, which is good for performance in my opinion. The hotter the gasses the faster they flow, to a point. Definitely harder on the Turbo. Ahh I gotta go I have to close one eye because I am seeing double. I talk too much. OUT

Thanks for the info. RIght now my manifold is ceramic coated inside and out. The manifold only has a few thousand miles on it and I can see some of the coating wearing off in certain area. I am just going to leave it as it is right now. I'll have to take it off and inspect it next year to see if I get any metal loss inside the manifold.
