who here has installed their own single turbo?

Hi everyone,

I was just wondering who all has installed their own kit and how much general automotive knowledge do you have?

The reason I ask about your auto know-how, Is cause I know very little about rotarys and automotives in general. But if I am given good instructions and good visual aids I am confident I can do almost any install.

About the most complicated thing I have done is replace the starter on my 89 Ford Probe GT. With nothing but a rachet set and a Haynes manual. I have also done simple installs like intake, header, exhaust, shocks/struts, and coilovers on my previous cars.

I also want to know how hard it would be to install and REMOVE a single kit and Apexi PFC. This will be so I can smog the car when the time comes, after the smog testing is complete I'll just install the single turbo back on.

PS even though I'm "somewhere in Korea" right now, I'll soon be moving to the lovely state of (northern) California. Ialso dont want to have to bribe a smog tech....or maybe if you guys can recommend a shop in NorCal that is really lax, or is only worried about the actual emmisions than I'd like to hear about them too.

TIA

ive done all my own work its not hard to do.but once ur heavily modded u cant really through ur stock crap back on with ecu u might blow something.u rip alot of wiring out and clear out alot ****.all u have to do is just get an hks kit and u will be able to keep ur smog pump on then just hook it up when the time comes.and throw ur cat in there.but then u gotta look at u put block off plates on now u gotta unblock **** to pass emissions.just get in good with a mechanic and pay him an extra buck or so.tell him he can get 10-10-220 with an extra dollar.

I installed mine. It sounds like you have enough know-how to do it, and you only learn by doing this stuff anyway. The hardest part is getting the stock turbo system out of the car. Installing the single will be far less than half of your working time. Switching back will be a PITA because you have to put the stock turbos back in and do all the hose plumbing and junk that you removed.

The PowerFC can be swapped in and out in less than 10 minutes. There is no wire cutting or anything. It is extremely simple to do.

thanks for the input max, I'm getting closer to buying an FD (if you can call a year close). And I want to do the labor myself to cut down on costs. afterwards I can take it to get dyno tuned and get the A/F checked on a wideband. <--that's what it's called right?

I'd do the tuning myself but as of right now, I only know a little bit about the FD's fuel and ignition system. I am learning though, and hopefully within a year or so I'll know a lot more.

another question.... aside from the FSM, does Haynes or chiltons make a service manual with instructions on how to service, install, and remove the turbo system? OR does the FSM give fairly detailed instructions on how to do all that?

There is only the FSM, nobody else made a manual for the FD. The hard part is not reallt the technical aspect of it, it's working in a very confined space with heat cycled nuts that really don't want to come off.

I'll be joining the single turbo FD owner club here within the next two weeks. I'm doing most of the work myself(except I'm going to have Dragon Fab the downpipe).

Once you get your hands dirty working on the FD, you'll understand it more and more, but you have to do the work, or at least see it, not just read about it.
