What is the diff T51R SPL or KAI
What is the differance between these two turbos. The obvious I have gotten was that the SPL was a better turbo and spooled faster. What is better about the SPL? I have researched some kits but it doesn't specify which it is, the kit cost $4,899.00. Which one would that be? Are they worth the money for the hard core power they are supposed to put out?
Thanks,
Thanks,

The proper names of them are:
T51R Kai
T51R Kai SPL
The SPL runs a larger compressor section.
Technically, the SPL does not spool faster than the regular Kai.
The turbine section is identical.
Unless...
You have a newer "BB" version.

Are all new T51R KAI the SPL version or is it the upgrade and is it worth the money to push the SPL or is it the standard now. And where did you get your rebuild from or did you rebuild it yourself.

An SPL is NOT an upgrade on the regular Kai.
The SPL is just a larger (compressor) turbo.
It's just like asking is a T04E "60" an "upgrade" to a T04E "54" - no, it is technically not.
I believe HKS does not offer rebuild kits or is able to offer rebuild services for these turbos.
HKS still sells the non-BB version in addition to the newer BB centers, I believe.
...Or it could be old stock.

The SPL is NOT the ball bearing version of the Kai.
There are :
T51R Kai
T51R SPL
T51R Kai BB
T51R SPL BB
The Kai runs 70 mm inducer and the SPL runs 76 mm inducer. They have different size exducer too. Anyway, the Kai should spool a tad quicker than the SPL.

Here is the first HKS T51, it was sold in Japan only, it has the same exact same wheel measurements as the T51 kai, has a standard T04 bolt flange , 1.0 a/r on the rear turbine, and is undivided...
I originally thought it was a straight garrett TV51 turbo, till I found HKS cast into the rear housing, and sent some emails and pics to some people in Japan about it.
The wheel sizes do not match up to the standard garretts that this turbo was based on, its interesting the wheel measurements carry forward to the new HKS T51 and Garrett GT40 turbo's so much for the GT's being all new tech...This turbo was originally sold by Panspeed to a guy who ran it on a FD at 610ps... I got it for around 550.00 canadian.. quite a steal..
