I use this clutch on my car and like it. http://www.rx7store.net/product.asp?0=206&1=241&3=756

Easy to drive on the street and holds well.

the act 6 puck unsprung is a good clutch but it may not be what your looking for. its a strip/street clutch and it can wear our your drive train quicker.

I recomend the OS Giken twinplate clutch, it can hold lots of torque and has a quite smooth engagment.

The OS twin plate or the Exedy twin plate are both great clutches with really good daily ability. What kind of racing are you talking about though? Drag or road track?? That should influence your decision as well.

The twin plates are going to feel more like a stock clutch pedal wise. I know from experience that they'll outlast the puck clutches and will be easier on your drivetrain while doing it. Plus when you go to a multiplate clutch you are changing the way your clutch works and you're making an improvement. You are switching from a pull type to a push type or vice versa. I always get those two terms confused. However, the change that is made is better than what we have stock. Just my .02 though. Best of luck with whatever choice you make.

well, i had the act street/strip with heavy duty pressure plate along with the sr motorsports flywheel and had it slip a couple of times on me with my 60-1. now its at gotham racing getting a t-66 and other upgrades. ihor just installed the exedy twin plate and said it is awesome....engages smooth like stock clutch but just a little firmer pedal. i cant wait to get it back.

the sr combo will be for sale soon to help offset the cost. check the parts for sale section after the rotary revolution

I have a ACT street/drag clutch on my Turbo II. I put down 400 whp+ and 380 lbs tq. It's also a daily driver. Works fine for me. Only slipped a few times.

good clutch

i have ACT extreme pp and 6 puck unsprung disk.

i would reccommend the same set up just with a street disk instead for more drivability.

centerforce sucks,

I have the act 6 puck extreme clutch in my car and i find it very streetable. I dont think i would recommend it for a daily driver, but if you have a weekend cruizer/racer, then i say this clutch is awesome. At first it is very grabby, but after about a week it is great.

Crosby hit the nail on the head. I've done both before and there's no way in HELL I'd ever go back to an ACT. Unless it was my daily POS that didn't need a good performance clutch.

exedy is the racing division of Daikin. Daikin does over a billion $ in revs selling oem clutches/drivetrain parts to little know companies like GM F Toyota Mazda...

Daikin makes the rx7 pressure plates that others (ACT etc) mod and sell in the aftermarket.

Exedy is essentially the R&D arm of Daikin. i unfortunately know this because i spent too much time looking at clutch package options for my engine package that will running shortly.

options narrow greatly when hp heads north of 450 rw.

you either generally retain drivabilty (you can slip the disc) w an organic disc and then shred it or you give up drivability ( clutch is either engaged or not) and have a non-slipping clutch.

lousy trade off as you have already gathered...

i looked carefully at double discs, having run a Tilton during my road racing carrer. when i say looked carefully i mean i called and talked extensively to the engineering people at many of the clutch outfits.

i was already to buy an ACT XT pressure plate and organic disc but my engine builder said the pressure plate wouldn't hold my motor, something he had proved less than a week prior.

i talked to kevin fujioka, head tech guy for exedy in michigan. he pointed me towards the Exedy Hyper Single. it is a super cool design... very similar to a double disc in the sense that the cover is forged aluminum and sits on 6 pedestals. the forged cover allows exedy to alter the lever ratio and deliver a clutch that will hold 600 ft pounds of torque w near oem pedal pressure. the back of the pressure plate has cooling fins cast in it for air flow. because it is not encapsulated in a pressed steel cover you do get airflow. the flywheel is chrome moly steel something i really like. i have this thing about exploding cheesy aluminum flywheels and my legs. the disc weighs the same as oem so shifting is easy on the syncros. the disc has 6 big fat springs in it which should help the driveline. the material is cerametallic and their own patented material. kevin fujiyoka says that the engagement of the Hyper Single is much easier than their twin disc.

sounds pretty good......... we will see in a week assuming Judge Ito gets my motor together thursday which is looking probable. i did find a forum member in the U K that runs the Hyper Single. he said the pedal was virtually similar to stock...

i will report when i actually know.

the good news is that the package is reasonably priced. i bought mine thru morepowerracing everett wa for. get this, $887. (that of course includes the flywheel). you will need to talk to neil and mention my name to get that price. they advertise it at $987.

the bad news is there may not be many in the country and Exedy's U S facility in Mich ships them in by boat. 90 days...

exedy mich 734 397 6607 Tricia is the go to person.

i also hear good things about Jason's Spec package which would have been my next choice.

Spec Clutch - Stage 3

Very nice pedal pressure (unbelievably light), very little chatter unless you slip from a very low RPM, but a little unforgiving (if you come out of the clutch too fast, you'll look like a dumbass from either stalling out or lurching forward). I'm totally used to it after only a short time.

www.randdmotorsports.com is another really good place to source your exedy stuff from. They seem to always have access to parts. Plus the owner of that company has lots of personal experience with those clutches. I have heard the exact same comments from him as from Howard about the hyper single. All around a great company with a superior product. Or if you wanna spend the extra $$ then you can buy an ORC clutch. Very nice but extremely expensive!!!!

I bought an Exedy Hyper Single based on Howard's research a month or two ago. That's what is going in my car when I get it back together. I'll post my experiences once it is running again.

*arise thread arise*

I gotta order a clutch in the next week. Ive never upgraded a clutch in my life so i need a little advice. I read through this thread but i see alot of different answers to my question so i want to ask it specifically.

Which act clutch would be best for a car that is daily driven (3 months of the year) making 400whp daily (but i would like it to hold up to 500 for my race gas, but this will only be once in a blue moon)

I dont plan on doing and hard launching because i cant afford to break my diff. Hopefully i will make it to a track day once this summer though.

Im thinking act 6-puck unsprung, is this what i need?

edit: also im going to use the stock flywheel, but im gonna have it resurfaced.
