Wastegate/Boost controller questions

I'd just like to clear some **** up here...

So all the external wastegates that im looking at, they all have an option to choose the type of spring that you want with it, you can have anywhere from 3-16psi springs.

How does this work in accordance to a manual boost controller?
How does the boost controller hook up to the wastegate?

Does the wastegate spring psi basically prevent the psi in the manifold to go any higher? so that it vents the pressure and the turbo spools down?

So say you wanted to run about 8lbs of boost, would you adjust the boost controller for 8lbs and then put in a 10psi spring in the wastegate as a sort of failsafe that the boost never goes above 10?

If you guys could clear these last few questions I have about the whole turbo how it works thing, It'll clear up a whole lot of other **** up as well.

thanks!

the spring in the wastegate is the lowest possible boost that you could run. if you wanted to run 10 psi minimum then get a 10 psi spring. a boost controller is to raise boost only.

I see now. After some researching I've found that the wastegate has a vacuum tube that runs to the compressor. The boost controller goes t's off between these two points.

somehow the pressure from the intake keeps the wastegate from opening to early, maybe a diaphram within it? So when you set the manual boost controller, it allows only so much pressure to keep the wastegate from opening, so if you set it for 8psi, then at >8psi there is no more pressure being sent to the wastegate via the tube, causing the wastegate to purge?

am I getting this?

thanks for your reply btw.

Ya, it uses a diaphram. Go pick up this months issue of turbo, it has a huge article on how WG's work.

ok, i just set up a manual boost controller on my firends car.. this is how it works:

ok, you buy the spring for the lowest boost setting that is ever going be run... lets just say 8 psi... so you buy a 8 psi spring and you dont install a boost controler, you will boost only 8 psi given that everything is installed properly.. now the way the wastegate is setup is that it has a vaccume hose going to it and when 8psi is reached inside the manifold, the wastegate opens up and lets the excess exhaust out... so, you tee off the vaccume hose and install a manual boost controler (i dont know about electronic ones but im guessing its the same concept). then, you want to boost 10 lbs so what you do is set the boost controler to vent out 2 lbs and you get 10 psi... then, if you want lets say 15, you set the boost controler valve to bleed off 7psi and you get 15... the spring still opens up at 8psi but you bleed off the rest from the boost controler and boost more...

hope that helps!!

if you have any more questions, i will get pics later on...

pics would be great!!

I have the sep edition of turbo that I bought like 3 weeks ago.. I havent seen anything newer at my store yet, maybe we don't carry it anymore..
anyways I'll flip through it after this and see if I can find the article.

So on the boost controller, is there a gauge, or do you just turn it clockwise like 10 degrees, hop in your car and read your boost gauge under throttle?
I don't think its that way, but ****, I have no idea.

thx roman, I appreciate that.

no, there is no guage... its like a restrictor.. you can get one at home depot...

its a two sided valve with a **** in the middle... there are many different kinds of them but when you turn it in one direction, it closes the hole a little... the more you close it, the less boost gets to the wastegate and therefore opens up later...

also, you have to turn it and drive it, turn it and drive it over and over again til you get the right boost setting.

ill get some pics this weekend..
