undecided single turbo build
undecided single turbo build
so i bought my 3rd rx7 a month ago and had intentions to just have the car for a little while, fix her up and then re-sell her for some money
I am currently going to school full time and I also run track so me having a job is really not in the agenda, haha. So me fixing and reselling cars has been my means of an income... So a couple weeks went by and i had decided to do the lsx swap.... I started to part out the car with the original rotary in it to gather the money i needed to complete the swap... After realizing i would not have the car done in a few months I changed my mind and decided to go with a single turbo setup... I am going to purchase a stock usdm motor with around 10xxx miles on it. The car does not have any port work done... my goals for the car are 350rwhp ... I want the car to be (somewhat) reliable because it will be my DD... i am not sure what turbo I want to use as of now but all suggestions would be appreciated... I will most likely purchase a used kit that pops up on the forum that fits my needs...
I am going to take off all of the emission stuff, upgrade fuel pump, upgrade secondary injectors, Will I need a aftermarket FPR??? Anything else I might need
so here is the car as of the first day i bought her
I am going to need some help and I am going to be asking a lot of questions.... thanks for the help/advice in advance

1. a job to pay for all of the extra unforeseen expenses
2. a smog hookup to get a single turbo setup to pass visual and smog checks here in CA
3. tuning
Building cars rarely results in a profitable outcome. You'll be lucky if you cover your costs.
Be careful buying a used motor unless it has had a compression test and you have a legit seller.
Does any body have a similar setup like what I am trying to achieve. If so what secondaries should I use 1300 or 1600... Should I upgrade the primaries sewell to some 850's. Can I make this kind of power without running a 3 bar? Or should I boost the crap out of it... Hehehe
Also I have a hook up for my smog and roughly how much is it going to cost for a tune??? Like ~300

You sound like a jobless punk, instead of a hopeful student. The questions and scenario you have is a constantly repetitive annoyance on the boards. All of your questions can be answered by using the search button. And the other guy was right, unless you have steady and expendable income, a reliable single turbo is not in the cards for you.

mattdavispv9,
I think what most are saying (some nicer than others) is that many of us have been down this path. You can do a budget build for around $5K, but you will be forced under that budget to cut some corners that "could" and probably WILL affect reliability and lead to catastrophic motor failure. To properly do a single turbo build you're looking at $7K to $10K+ depending on whether you do the work or someone else builds it for you. Assuming that you're technically savvy, we'll assume that you can do a budget job for $7K. Upon selling, you'd be hard pressed in this economy to recoup half of your investment.
If it were me in your position, I'd keep it close to stock (where it will still pass CA emissions), do a few cosmetic upgrades, enjoy it for a while and try to break even on the sale. These cars are difficult if not impossible to sell for a profit, unless you have a pool of buyers who have fat wallets and are naive about rotaries. Most prospective buyers know that times are tough, so lowballing is rampant and making money is a challenge.
Good luck with whatever you decide to do. There are TONS of build threads in the single turbo section where you can get good advice from people who've been there and made the same mistakes that you're about to face. Be courteous, take their advice to heart, and weigh the consequences. Owning rotaries is not for the faint of heart. It's ecstasy and agony all wrapped up into a sick little package that most of us can't live without!
Again, good luck and be patient!
