Turbo upgrading

So I have this turbo that I just pulled off to replace some gaskets. I have always felt the hotside is a bit small and was wondering what the process is to upgrade to to a higher a/r.
Specs for mine.
Compressor .70 A/R

Turbine .81 A/R

Compressor wheel is 76mm/60mm

Turbine wheel is 64mm/58mm

I've seen most have been happy with the 1.06 size and right now this turbo hits high boost fast and seems to peak out quickly.

I would think the hotside housing and turbine wheel needs to be changed?

you have something close to a 60-1 on the cold side and a T3 Stage 3 hotside.

the compressor should do 60 pounds of air or 450 Max SAE rotary rwhp.

then there's the hotside... looks like a T3 Stage 3 wheel.

5.71 sq inches of comp area
4.53 sq inches of turbine area

the OE FD has 5.97 cold and 5.25 hot.

you should be getting a lot of backpressure and high(er) EGTs as the hot side is restrictive.

a nice inexpensive replacement would be Borg Warner S300 60

P/N 177272 straight comp output
P/N 177280 90 degree

comp area 6.437
hotside 6.31
.91 T4 A/R

dirt cheap, low back pressure.

Howard

As of now I am just trying to find an inexpensive way to change the hotside out. And it is a T4.

So you don't have to change the turbine wheel for that?

What turbo is it? Unless its something unusual there should be something off the shelf for it.
But like HC says, it might end up being more cost effective to go s300although that is a bigger high hp turbo and the one you already have with that sizing and a bigger t-housing will spool quicker than the s300 and still go to cleanly to redline at moderate boost levels

Guess I'm not asking the question right as I am either being sold a new turbo or not much help on what I am asking.

The basic question is to upgrade the hotside of the turbo from the .81 housing on it now. I found a .96 so that is what I ordered but needed to know if that means the turbine wheel needs to be changed/upgraded.

its been said, and i will say it again.. WHAT turbo IS IT>???

you told the size of your car and the color but not the make and model, we can't help you and tell you that 4wd was an option and could be retrofitted because we dont know the make and model... you get it??

HC said the sizes are close to a 60-1.. but which one,, a to4b? a td06?

also the problem with old turbo is there are soo many clones and copies you may have a one off peice of junk that has no interchangeability at all.

so do you know what brand and model turbo it is, because with the infomation provided, your best bet to buy a new turbo. a borgwarner is going to be a common togo, for a good reason.

thats one of the most common.. yes you can swap hotsides to a different A/r without removing the turbine, having the balance anything.

Thanks, yea I really just wanted to open the exhaust side a bit without a couple hundred bucks. The turbo itself has been doing amazing and I love the oil and water cooled.

Is there a difference in that one and this one besides the a/r?

You really need to find out for sure what turbo you have. The wheel specs you listed are different to gt3582r.
Maybe take the whole unit to a local turbo specialist and let them help you out.

That is crazy small exhaust side for a rotary.

The exhaust wheel is the same size as stock FC RX-7 HT-18 turbo and the AR is significantly smaller (0.81AR veruse 1.00AR).

Since it is a China-Charger knock off GT35R we don't really know what exhaust housings will fit it.

A real GT3576R has a 68mm/62.3mm exhaust wheel so you know a GT3576R exhaust housing won't fit.

A real GT3076R has a 60mm exhaust wheel so you know a GT3076R exhaust housing won't fit.

Closest T3 exhaust wheel I can find is-
451314-0003 64mm/56.25mm 6.25mm shaft 77trim

If your China-Charger center housing/hat fits in a T3 exhaust housing (real Garret GT series do not) you could run the T3 exhaust housings that fit the above wheel and a T3 to T4 adapter.

A couple mm gap on the exhaust housing is not a problem on a rotary. I ran a stock HT-18 (64mm) in a P-trim exhaust housing (74mm) and it spooled ok.

__________

This is a case where you could have saved money, made more power, better response and had a more reliable turbo with a stock hybrid S5 FC turbo like a BNR Stage3.
Fully divided cast manifold with dual internal wastegates bolts right on and made by Mazda/Hitachi to last on a rotary.

___________

One thing you could do is take the exhaust housing off the turbo and grind the turbo scroll slot (inlet to the exhaust wheel) about double the width it is now

This will give you a diverging AR exhaust housing that will be horribly inefficient (surprisingly only a little bit worse spool on a rotary) and it will flow a tiny bit more

Yeah, if its a china charger your flogging a dead horse. Maybe see if the original seller has alternative housings if its been a good turbo?

Derek - I've got a TD-61 that I bought used which meant to have less than 500 miles on it for my own build a year or two ago that I don't think I'll end up using (I'm leaning towards an EFR 8374 or 9174 instead). It's obviously a bit bigger than what you're running, but it may work nicely.

If you're interested let me know, I can run it by base this weekend for you to check out.

Not to hijack, BUT

Is that the billet compressor, ball bearing turbo? or just the billet compressor, regular bearing?

Everything is back together and running nice. That little bit of extra space makes the exhaust sound a bit nicer and not so much boost pressure, but still the same pull. I was also able to take care of every single exhaust gasket to finally get the small exhaust leak I could not find to go away. Was a really easy to do change as well just undoing the 6 bolts.

He is running the 64mm exhaust wheel in a 74mm exhaust wheel housing like I did once. Big gaps around the exhaust wheel and it still spools. Aren't rotaries amazing.
